Hannah Carmen from Vienna, Virginia has announced her commitment to swim and study at Drexel University beginning in the 2022-2023 academic year.

“I’m so incredibly excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Drexel University!! Thank you so much to my friends, family, and all of the amazing coaches I’ve had over the years. Go Dragons!

Carmen swims for Machine Aquatics out of Vienna, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, D.C. Last spring, she earned many best times while at the Christianburg Sectional meet. Her best times from that meet include the 500 (5:04.57) and 1000 (10:32.64) freestyles, 200 IM (2:07.84), and 200 breaststroke (2:27.44).

This summer she attended the NCSA Championships, where she earned long course best times in the 100 (1:07.53) and 200 (2:27.72) backstrokes as well as the 100 breaststroke (1:18.18). She also placed 31st in the 400 IM with a time of 5:13.67 and 32nd in the 400 freestyle with a time of 4:41.81.

Carmen begins her senior year this fall at James Madison High School. Her high school team were Virginia Class 6A (big schools) State Champions in both 2019 and 2020 as well as third-place finishers in 2021.

Her best short course times are:

  • 200 IM: 2:07.84
  • 400 IM: 4:23.91
  • 200 backstroke: 2:04.64
  • 500 freestyle: 5:04.57
  • 1000 freestyle: 10:32.64
  • 1650 freestyle: 17:33.50

Drexel University is a private university located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The school is a member of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). At the 2021 CAA Championships, Drexel finished sixth out of six teams.

Carmen has the potential to make an immediate impact for Drexel at the conference level and in the school all-time top 10. Based on her best times, she would have finished in the A-final of the 400 IM as well as the B-final of the 200 IM, 1650 freestyle, and 200 backstroke at the 2021 conference meet. Her best times also place her third in the 400 IM, seventh in the 200 backstroke, and ninth in the 200 IM and 1000 freestyle in school history.

Carmen will arrive on campus with plans to study mechanical engineering next fall as a member of the class of 2026.
