Michael Andrew on New Training Home: “Who wouldn’t want to live in Hawaii and train”

2026 Sacramento Pro Series

Video captured by Ahmad Zeid, Big Friendly Swim Podcast.

Michael Andrew seems to have a new lease on life, and it is showing in his swimming. After moving to Hawaii to reunite and train with his father, Peter Andrew, the Olympic champion is looking better than he has in months, if not years. On Day 1 of the Sacramento Pro Swim, Andrew captured gold in the 50 Breast, touching in 26.9. We will see Andrew race more again tonight, taking on the 100 fly/50 Back double.

Hawaii is a bit isolated but closer to the comps in Australia and Asia if Michael wants to test his skills overseas

while its possible to live a life of purpose in hi, MA assumes his life of leisure — having his parents cater to his every need and whim and not responsibilities but swimming, grilling, surfing and driving a truck he gets for free is a life all would want. “who wouldn’t” want his life are those who are mature enough at age 27 to take on adult-sized responsibilities vs a mere life of leisure

What a dumb take!

Choices have rewards and consequences, including choosing family.

I want to know where to sign up for free trucks! I bet they weren’t giving them out. Is it possible that it is a reward/payment for all the hours training in and out of a pool?

I bet you idolize millionaires but then refuse to put in that amount of work or think it is sad that they don’t see their kids much. Just because a person has learned to live within their means and takes advantage of their assets doesn’t mean they aren’t servicing their responsibilities.

I’ve never heard an Olympic medalist brag about their life of leisure ROFL

Exactly the point. Even in this statement likely written by PA they assume the A fam suggests they are the only people with their priorities in order, suggesting millionaires don’t choose family or spend time with their kids but look at us we are superior to all with our family values. they don’t believe anyone who has a job outside of spending 24 7 with their kid on a pool deck or asking for free things cause their kid won a medal in a relay , contributing to society beyond look at us grill steak is going about life the right way. The As believe their way is the only right way not just in their training technique but in… Read more »

You sound a little bitter, cubicle boy. I’m going to enjoy my 945 AM run a little bit more for the both of us!

Is Lebron James living a life of leisure because he has a chef prepare meals for him and access to a driver, private jets, etc? Not doing much outside of your sport is what professional athletes do. Recovery is part of the job. Personally, it actually sounds like a very stressful job to me. Your livelihood depends on fractions of a second a few times per year, and you have to careful about everything you do as to not negatively impact your body/performance.

Lebron James contributes to a team and has accomplished significantly more as an athlete than MA. He’s a far superior athlete than MA. Hundreds of individual swimmers have won relay gold medals throughout Olympic history. MA can’t swim more than 50 meters without getting gassed. Many Olympians have meaningful careers in addition to swimming and find ways to serve their communities beyond occasionally signing a couple autographs.

LeBron is actually known for being pretty frugal

In this era of social media, MA has been able to monetize on the hype, enabling him to drive a big truck, surf and grill all day. If he had come along a decade or two earlier , he’d be coaching swim lessons now down at the YMCA to pay the bills.

MA already abandoned the Missouri team he’s supposed to be coaching regularly. his dad lasted only a couple weeks coaching at a HI school. they don’t last when it comes 2 contributing 2 anything but themselves.

winning against pretty much zero competition in this meet.as many have stated before MA has zero responsibilities in life. MAs 27 yet his parents still cater to his every need. he never has to accommodate anyone but himself. just swims a few laps a day, grills, drives his truck and surfs. most people his age contribute to society in meaningful ways. he embodies a life of leisure

I hear what you’re saying. MA is a genuinely nice guy, but still comes off as entitled. It is just the way he was raised I suppose. He has maybe another 5 years at best before the cash runs dry and some hard reality hits.

About Coleman Hodges

Coleman Hodges

Coleman started his journey in the water at age 1, and although he actually has no memory of that, something must have stuck. A Missouri native, he joined the Columbia Swim Club at age 9, where he is still remembered for his stylish dragon swim trunks. After giving up on …
