McKenzie Campbell Breaks Georgia Tech 200 IM School Record in Double Dual

The Georgia Tech women hosted Tulane and Arkansas in a double dual meet. This is the first meet of 2022 for Georgia Tech as their previous meets have been canceled due to COVID-19 protocols and weather. Tulane is coming off of a loss to Houston and Arkansas is coming off of a win over Kansas.

Arkansas won both dual meets as they defeated Georgia Tech (154-146) and Tulane (218.50-79.50). Senior Andrea Sansores led the way for the Razorbacks as she earned wins in both the 100 butterfly (54.08) and 100 backstroke (53.65). She holds the #17 time in the NCAA this season in the 100 backstroke as she went a 51.87 at midseason.

Senior Vanessa Herrmann also led the way as she won both the 100 (1:01.07) and 200 (2:13.58) breaststrokes. Herrmann holds the #11 time in the NCAA this season in the 100 breaststroke (59.18). She also is #23 in the NCAA this season in the 200 breaststroke (2:09.03). 

Sophomore Bella Cothern also earned two wins for Arkansas. She won both the 50 (22.52) and 100 (50.33) freestyles. Her season best times are a 22.43 in the 50 and a 48.83 in the 100.

Georgia Tech defeated Tulane by a score of 237-63. Georgia Tech was led by senior McKenzie Campbell. Campbell won the 200 IM in a program record of 1:59.79. Campbell did not swim the event at the 2021 ACC Championships but she did swim it at midseason with a time of 2:00.04. Her new program record would have placed her 15th at ACC’s last year. Campbell also won the 200 butterfly in a time of 1:56.92. This was just off of her time of 1:56.90 from midseason that places her at #35 in the NCAA this season.

Junior Brooke Switzer also picked up two wins. She won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:47.31 and the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:54.61. 

Tulane was led by junior Lilly Byrne. Byrne won the 1000 freestyle in a time of 9:58.63. This was a season best for Byrne.

Other first-place finishes include: 

  • 200 medley relay: Arkansas (1:38.43)
  • 200 backstroke: Kobie Melton (1:57.54)
  • 400 freestyle relay: Arkansas (3:20.37)

Georgia Tech’s next meet is scheduled for January 29th at home against Gardner-Webb. Arkansas and Tulane both do not have another meet until their respective conference championships.
