Matt King on 47.7 100 Free in Norway: “My first best time in 3 years”

2026 Bergen Swim Festival

Indiana pro Matt King had a fabulous weekend of racing at the Bergen Swim Festival, registering a PB in the 100 Free (47.7) while also hitting 21.72 in the 50 Free (.02 off his PB) and 23.6 in the 50 fly just for fun. King described that this season has, in large part, been about recovering from the illness that hit him last summer at the World University Games, where he lost 20lbs. After putting an emphasis on the weight room and getting back to his normal weight, King seems to be in a good place heading into the summer, where summer nationals in Irvine will be his focus meet.

I’m so not used to American men popping off in the 100m free in season. In the past we would rarely see sub 48 second times before nationals/olympic trials.

American men’s 100m free has never been deeper than it is now and I’m here for it.

Hopefully this means they’re finally about to take out the 4x100m free world record.

Ya’ll are tripping. The headline proves Bowe’s point! Yes, congrats dropped a miniscule amount in the 100 and still off PB in 50.

Not hating at all. He’s put up some great swims for USA, but Bowe is right. It’d be awesome if King can get to 47 low cause we need it, but like Bowe stated his recent curve hasn’t been trending that way.

That may be true but a lot of the top swimmers struggle to keep improving. Once you get to his level, it’s tough to improve. So I wouldn’t say it’s IUs fault. I think most would agree IU has produced a lot of top level swimmers.

Timeliness is important and this has laid out well.

1. Michigan digs at IU through Matt King’s performances.
2. SS writes about the rivalry
3. A big name transfers away from Michigan
4. Matt does well at an international meet

I can’t wait to see how this grows in steps 5-8 😉

Matt King has multiple 47.3 relay splits onhis resume. A reliable relay anchor. He was 47.3 on anchor in 400 free relay 2023/ 47.3 was on the medley relay prelims at 2023/ 47.3 was on the 400 medly relay at 2024 doha/ 47.4 was on the medley relay at WUG 2025. All these splits made when he was 47.9 with individually.

But the depth is huge for 100 free.

Alexy/ Guliano/ Sammon/ Lasco/ Curry/ Kulow/ Macfedden/ Casas/ Dressel/ Armstrong/ King ..these all are the current active sub 48 s swimmers ..so the competition for the relay spots huge.

Pretty sure we can safely take Armstrong off that list

Yes, the Magic man is going for enhanced games neh..

Armstrong always was a nice guy to see on screen, enjoyed all his interviews and the details.

Once he said that he is ready to give up all his individual chances over to be on all five relays in WCs. He did that being on every relay including that decent 1.45.7 split on the 800 free relay by swimming 200 free in ages only learning how to swim 200 free from Hobson before the race. And he took home 7 medals from doha 2024.

And also he wrote the histrory by doing different legs in between prelims and finals in paris medley relay. Where he bought the team home silver… Read more »

Nice to hear more of the inside of what is going on and how people look at things. I did think that all international pools had the T 2.0m from the wall.
