The Monaco stop of the Mare Nostrum Tour in Monaco saw Dutch athlete Marrit Steenbergen top the prize money standings with €2,300 (approx. $2,600 USD) earned in just two events after breaking the Mare Nostrum Tour Record in the 100 free.
In Monaco, athletes were able to earn an extra €600 for breaking the Monaco meet record and an additional €750 if they also broke the overall Mare Nostrum record. There were six records broken in Monaco, and all six athletes, including Steenbergen, broke both records for a total of €1,350.
Steenbergen also had the benefit of winning both of her events including the “speed tournament” in the 50 freestyle, which was worth €600 rather than the typical €350 she won for her 100 freestyle.
As a reminder, here was how prize money worked in Monaco:
- 1st place in each event* – €350
- 2nd place in each event* – €200
- 3rd place in each event* – €100
- Mare Nostrum Record – €750

- 2nd place, Speedo Tournament – €300
- *First* World Record – €15,000

- Meet Record – €600
On top of Steenbergen, Kristof Milak (men’s 100 fly), McKenzie Siroky (women’s 50 breast), Siobhan Haughey (women’s 200 free), Pavel Samusenko (50 back), and Erika Fairweather (women’s 400 free) also broke Mare Nostrum Tour records to bring home the additional €1,350

Kirsty Coventry is absolutely fuming right now
Dang, we got more money at the Speedo Grand Challenge
Might be able to pay for a hotel room in Monaco for a night – sweet
I thought the pay was low 20+ years ago and it is the same now, so a lot worse overall. This seem to be general situation for many meets. Some meets have not increased their record bonus or payout in almost 50 years.
