BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland earned victories on both the men’s and women’s sides Saturday in a tri-meet against American University and Lehigh University, with the Greyhounds collecting top finishes and fast times across the board.

The Loyola men defeated Lehigh 250-48 and American 252-47, while the women topped Lehigh 190-110 and American 216-84.

In the men’s 1000-yard freestyle, Kiernan Leary led the way with a time of 9:42.92, followed by Cody Miles in 9:45.61 and Hayden Bartz in 9:49.07. Bartz also won the 500 freestyle in 4:42.25, with Leary (4:42.64), Miles (4:43.98) and Thomas Cechini (4:44.03) close behind.

Gavin Abelende won the 200 freestyle in 1:42.04, with Cechini (1:42.37) and Tyler Knurek (1:42.45) finishing second and third. Abelende also claimed the 100 freestyle in 45.86, just ahead of Liam Schindler (45.88) and Derek Feldman (46.51).

Joe Hayburn won the 100 backstroke in 48.72 and the 200 backstroke in 1:49.62. JD Moyer (50.01), Patrick Ciorna (51.02) and Ben Schlotterer (51.38) followed him in the 100, while Moyer (1:52.84), Schlotterer (1:52.90) and Ciorna (1:53.69) rounded out the top four in the 200.

Michael Venit led a sweep in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.55, followed by Jack Hathaway (57.95), Elias Corn (58.21) and Kaden Fatta (58.51). Venit also won the 200 breaststroke in 2:05.51.

Luke Dwyer won the 200 butterfly in 1:51.16, with Cameron Shinnick second in 1:53.46. Schindler took the 100 fly in 49.84, followed by Dwyer (49.91), Abelende (50.33), Shinnick (50.51), Hans Van Lierop (51.13), Tristan Tosoni (51.18) and Knurek (51.80).

In diving, Thomas McCarthy won both the 1-meter (287.80) and 3-meter (262.20) events, with Sam Hersick finishing second in both (255.75 and 239.85).

On the women’s side, Faith Karr placed second in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:39.61, followed by Ellie Davis in 10:40.51. In the 500 freestyle, Karr finished second again in 5:12.33, with Cecilia Van Lierop (5:15.60), Adrianna Caponiti (5:19.62), Davis (5:20.75) and Elsie Bredbenner (5:21.39) all in the top ten.
Michela Schultz finished second in the 200 freestyle in 1:55.06, while Lauren Lane (1:58.15) and Van Lierop (1:58.72) placed sixth and seventh. Haley Robinson won the 50 freestyle in 23.40 and placed second in the 100 butterfly in 57.61. Christine Datovech won the 100 fly in 56.17 and placed fourth in the 200 fly in 2:07.02.

Virginia Walsh placed third in the 100 backstroke in 58.20, followed by Kelly Bruen (59.20) and Grace Dwyer (59.34). Bryce Gold won the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.73, with Meghan Donovan (1:06.01) and Riley McGerald (1:06.79) finishing third and fourth. Donovan also won the 200 breaststroke in 2:25.73, just ahead of Noelle Hoffman in 2:25.77.

Riley Fried won the 200 butterfly in 2:04.50 and the 200 individual medley in 2:06.91. In diving, Kassidy Georgevich placed second on the 3-meter board with a score of 222.80, followed by Calista Fasser (222.60) and Annie Dockx (212.50). Fasser also won the 1-meter event with a score of 230.00, with Georgevich (218.45) and Dockx (212.85) again finishing in the top five.

Loyola closed the meet with victories in both 200 freestyle relays. The women’s A relay of Gianna Davis (24.59), Schultz (23.97), Gabby Jones (24.43) and Robinson (22.84) won in 1:35.83. The men’s A relay of Colin Davis (21.55), Schindler (20.11), Hayburn (20.40) and Feldman (19.96) posted a winning time of 1:22.02.

BALTIMORE – Lehigh women’s swimming and diving dove into the season on Saturday afternoon against Loyola and American. The Mountain Hawks beat American 176-122, but fell to the Greyhounds 190-110.

Senior Mairin Ludwig picked up right where she left off last year with a trio of top two individual finishes. She started off her day winning the 200-yard freestyle, swimming 1:52.22. Ludwig followed that up in the 500-yard freestyle, where she won the event with a time of 5:02.60. In the 200-yard individual medley she was a mere hundredth of a second off of her third win of the day, but 2:06.92 only managed her second place. Ludwig was not the only Mountain Hawk to show out in that event. Junior Eliza Meth (2:11.58), first-year Eliza Johnson (2:12.19), and sophomore Clara Moschella (2:12.64) all finished within a about a second of each other to finish fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively.

Johnson wasn’t done there, securing second place finishes in each of her two other events. In the 100-yard backstroke she just missed the top spot as her time of 57.08 was just .18 seconds off of her first collegiate win. Johnson repeated her silver medal performance in the 200-yard backstroke, swimming 2:06.93. She was narrowly trailed by fellow first years Sophie Perry and Bonnie Zuo. Perry finished third in 2:07.57, and Zuo placed fourth with a time of 2:07.85.

Genevieve Cody was another first-year who started her career out with a bang. She first placed third in the 50-yard freestyle. Cody and fellow first-year Gigi Michaels (fourth) went back-to-back, finishing in 24.16 and 24.51. Cody one-upped herself over the 100-yard freestyle, taking the win with a time of 52.10.

Senior Caitlin Deitch had a pair of podium finishes in the butterfly events. Deitch placed second in the 200-yard race, finishing in 2:06.15, and swam 57.52 to place third over 100-yards.

Claire Coughlin started her sophomore year off with a new personal best. She swam 10:40.61 in the 1000-yard freestyle, missing the podium by only one-tenth of a second. Zoe Davies also had a good start to her sophomore year, placing fifth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:07.39).

In the 200-yard breaststroke, the Mountain Hawks had two top finishers. First-year Emma Gyorkos started off her collegiate career with a third place finish of 2:26.96, and Meth swam her way to fourth place with a time of 2:27.78.

Junior Katie Whitaker has herself a good day in the diving events. She won the three-meter dive, scoring 242.10 points. In the one-meter distance she scored 215.15 points, placing fourth.

The meet was bookended by the two relay events, and Lehigh found their way onto the podium for both. The Mountain Hawks started their day placing third over the 400-yard medley. The team of Johnson, Davies, Deitch, and Cody swam 3:51.44. They ended the meet with a second place finish over the 200-yard freestyle. The squad swam 1:36.43 and was filled by Cody, Michaels, Ludwig, and Coughlin.

Lehigh looks ahead to next weekend, where the Mountain Hawks have two separate dual meets at home. The Mountain Hawks first face off against West Chester at 5 p.m. on Friday, followed by Rider at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

BALTIMORE – Lehigh men’s swimming and diving kicked off the season on Saturday afternoon against Loyola and American. The Mountain Hawks lost 250-48 to the Greyhounds, but picked up the win against the Eagles 209-84.

It was sophomore Jack Deppe who made the biggest impact for Lehigh, finishing within the top five over all three of his individual events. His best placing was the 200-yard individual medley, where he finished second. His time of 1:54.41 was just 11 hundredths of a second behind the top finisher. Deppe came fourth in both the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle, finishing in 46.69 over 100 and 1:42.88 over 200.

In the backstroke events, senior Ben Kisker worked his way to two top finishes. Kisker finished the 200-yard backstroke sixth, swimming 1:55.26. In the 100-yard backstroke, he swam 51.87 and finished 5th. Right behind him were sophomore Tristan Ronayne (52.29) and junior Matt McLellan (52.85), who finished sixth and seventh, respectively.

Two first-years started their careers with podium finishers in their respective events. Spencer Campbell placed third in the 200-yard butterfly, swimming 1:53.88. Andrew Takach finished the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:08.97, which also gave him third place.

Lehigh had top-five finishers in both the longest and shortest freestyle events of the day. The 1000-yard freestyle event, first-year TJ Hayes opened up his collegiate career with a fourth place finish, swimming 9:51.36. In the shortest event of the day, the 50-yard freestyle, the Mountain Hawks had a pair of sophomores place within the top-five. Chase Bearley placed fourth, finishing at 21.35. Davis Woerner finished a fraction of a second behind him at 21.40, placing fifth.

The Mountain Hawks concluded their season opener with the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Woerner, Bearley, Aaron Williams, and Frankie Prekop finished in 1:25.08, which placed them third.

Lehigh looks ahead to next weekend, where the Mountain Hawks have two separate dual meets at home. The Mountain Hawks first face off against West Chester at 5 p.m. on Friday, followed by Rider at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

BALTIMORE – Two wins and five runner-up finishes highlighted a tri-meet against Loyola Maryland and Lehigh for American University men’s and women’s swimming & diving on Saturday afternoon. Junior Kate Williams and sophomore Piper Crosby both earned individual victories for the Eagles.

Notable Results

  • Williams went 10:36.03 in the women’s 1,000 freestyle for AU’s first win of the day.
  • In the women’s 100 backstroke, Crosby posted a time of 56.90 to come out on top in a field of 13 swimmers.
  • Crosby later took second place in the 50 freestyle in 24.07, while Gilbert was fifth in 24.54.
  • In the women’s 100 freestyle, Gilbert took fifth again with a time of 53.26.
  • The women’s 400 medley relay team of Crosby, sophomore Marin Priddy, sophomore Grace Gilbert, and senior Isabel McGovern, took second place in a tight race with a time of 3:50.75 that ranks 14th all-time at American.
  • Priddy earned an individual second-place finish in the women’s 100 breaststroke in 1:05.71.
  • Senior Peyton Thurman placed second in women’s 1-meter diving with a score of 220.95, and fourth on the 3-meter with a score of 218.05.
  • McGovern posted a third-place finish in the women’s 200 fly in 2:06.57.
  • Junior Fiona McMahon and freshman Lucy Penna placed third and fourth in the women’s 200 free with times of 1:57.37 and 1:57.78, respectively.
  • The Eagles had number of strong finishes in the women’s 500 freestyle with sophomore Demetra Bicos in third, Williams in fifth, freshman Abby Rothrock in sixth, and McMahon in seventh.
  • Freshman Alex Way posted a pair of third-place finishes for the men’s team in diving. His score of 250.55 on the 1-meter is seventh all-time at AU, while his score of 234.35 on the 3-meter is 13th all-time.
  • Sophomore Luke Martens earned a fifth-place finish for the men with a time of 9:53.46 in the 1,000 free.
  • In the men’s 200 fly, sophomore Cole Coffman also took fifth with a time of 1:57.49. Junior Ryan Tiffany was seventh in that event.
  • The same foursome from the early relay, Priddy, Crosby, McGovern, and Gilbert, placed third in the 200 freestyle relay to close out the day.
  • The women lost 176-122 to Lehigh overall, and 216-84 to Loyola Maryland. On the men’s side, Loyola Maryland won 252-47, and Lehigh won 209-84.
