Lochte Takes Down Grevers’ 100 IM Record On Day 3 Of Masters Nationals

2017 US MASTERS SWIMMING SPRING NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHPIPS

In his first competition since being suspended after the 2016 Rio Games, six-time Olympic gold medalist Ryan Lochte hasn’t shown much rust. Competing at the 2017 US Masters Nationals in the 30-34 age category, Lochte followed up a solid performance on Friday with an even better one Saturday, collecting two individual gold medals, two relay golds and a pair of Masters National Records in the process.

After winning the 200 IM and placing 2nd in the 100 breast yesterday, Lochte put up a new Masters National Record of 47.71 in the 100 IM, edging out fellow Olympian Matt Grevers‘ two-year-old record of 47.77. Lochte also won gold in the 50 back, missing Grevers’ National Record by just over two tenths in 21.73.

Lochte wasn’t the only big name in action, as Cal’s Nathan Adrian showed up on Saturday to compete after an impressive showing at the TYR Meet of Champions on Friday night. Adrian, competing in the 25-29 age category, won two golds as well with victories in the 100 fly (48.06) and 100 IM (48.99).

Other notable names competing included former Cal Bear Tony Cox, SC World Championship gold medalist Mike Alexandrov and former USC Trojan and German Olympian Dimitri Colupaev. Cox won the 25-29 50 back in a time of 21.78, impressively just 0.05 off of Lochte’s time. Alexandrov took down the 30-34 200 breast title in 1:57.69, and added a runner-up finish in the 100 IM behind Lochte after defeating him in the 100 breast yesterday. Colupaev placed 3rd in the 100 IM and 5th in the 50 back in the 25-29 age group.

Lochte, Alexandrov, Cox and Luke Pechmann came together to break the 25+ 200 medley relay record for Golden Road Aquatics, putting up a time of 1:27.81 to take out the old record of 1:28.48 set by the Olympic Club last year. They had impressive splits all around, including 21.75 for Lochte on back, 24.52 for Alexandrov on breast and 20.73 for Cox on fly. Colupaev subbed in for Alexandrov in the 200 free relay to give Golden Road another victory, just missing the record. Both Colupaev and Lochte split sub-20.

There were three other national relay records, as the Puget Sound Masters broke both the 55+ women’s 200 free and 200 medley records in times of 1:45.60 and 1:59.24 respectively. Also clearing a record was the 75+ women for Tampalpais Aquatic Masters, who broke the 200 free relay record by nearly 17 seconds in 2:41.53.

Along with Lochte’s record, there was an incredible 20 other individual Masters Nationals Record set on Saturday. Take a look at them below:

Thank you for mentioning the other records and not just those set by Lochte. It would be nice to see more routine coverage of Masters swimming on SwimSwam.

Agreed. If they want to just strictly cover Olympians, why not something on Rick Collella, bronze medalist in Montreal, who is doing insane times at 65, beating the winners two age groups younger.

Master’s nationals is the best when these guys (Grevers, Ervin, Adrian, Cullen Jones, Schneider, Townsend, and now Lochte) show up. It’s really a thrill to the other competitors, and they are always so gracious and look like they’re having a great time. I wish more would do it. I know I’m missing some on the women’s side (Micah Lawrence, for one), but it’s a great way to celebrate the sport.

All those records are insane, a 2:02 200 breast for a 45-49 year old man is epic. 48.9 for Adrian, I agree would like to see that video.
