Liberty Lady Flames Earn 168-105 Senior Meet Victory Over Campbell

Liberty wrapped up its regular season with a 168-105 win over Campbell, a two-day meet which finished on Saturday at Liberty Natatorium.

With the win, Liberty improves its record to 4-2, while Campbell finishes its regular season at 6-6.

Liberty honored its six seniors – Hannah Huenefeld, Maggie Huenefeld, Alexis Plogger, Jessica Schellenboom, Rachel Strickland and Eva Suggs – with a Senior Day ceremony prior to Saturday’s 11 a.m. session.

Notable
• Liberty won every event contested at the meet except for one. With the win in hand, Liberty contested the final three swimming races as exhibitions.

• Liberty’s Grace Isaacs (200 IM, 400 IM), Shelby Kahn (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle), Abbie Shaw (100 back, 200 back) and Jessica Schellenboom (100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke) posted two individual-event wins each.

• Isaacs has won the 400 IM at each of the last seven meets which she has contested the event, dating to the 2021 TYR ’85 Invite.  That includes winning it at the 2022 CCSA Championships and at three meets this season.

• Shaw has swept the 100 and 200 backstroke at four different meets this season, while Kahn has won both the 200 and 500 freestyle at both dual meets against Campbell during the 2022-23 campaign. This weekend was the first time since Jan. 23, 2021 versus Campbell that Schellenboom has earned victory in both breaststroke events in the same meet.

Historically Speaking
• Liberty is 21-2 all-time against Campbell in swimming & diving, with the Lady Flames winning each of the last 21 meetings. Campbell is Liberty’s most-frequent opponent in program history.

• The Lady Flames defeated the Camels 141-116 to open the 2022-23 season, Oct. 1 in Buies Creek, N.C. Then, the Camels won the TYR ’85 Invite in late November, with the host Lady Flames finishing second.

• The Lady Flames are 18-2 all-time in home dual meets at Liberty Natatorium since the opening of the facility in the fall of 2017.

• Herndon improved her collegiate-best one-meter diving score to 251.03 today, a mark that ranks eighth on Liberty’s all-time top 10 performers list in the event.

Liberty will compete in the 2023 CCSA Swimming & Diving Championships, Feb. 15-18 at Allan Jones Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tenn. The last two times the CCSA Championships were held in Knoxville (2014, 2020), the Lady Flames claimed the team title.

LYNCHBURG, VA. – Campbell fell 168-105 at Liberty Saturday afternoon. The meet began with the 1650 free Friday night, with 16 events following on Saturday.

Meredith Ashburn collected Campbell’s only individual win of the day in the 100 free with a time of 52.26. Laura Lopez took third in the same event to give Campbell two of the top three spots.

Lopez also got on the podium in the 200 free with a 1:55.84, good for another third place finish. Angelica Ragazzoni took third as well in the following event, the 100 back, touching in 57.98. Ragazzoni would later take third in the 200 back as well.

Izza Gaskey notched her highest finish of the day in the 100 breast, finishing second with a time of 1:06.27.

Elishka Hajek continued the strong performances by freshmen with a second-place finish in the 50 free at 24.69.

Campbell returns to action next Saturday for the final dual meet of the year at Old Dominion. The meet is the final tune up before the CCSA Championships in Knoxville, Tenn. on Feb. 15.
