Lewis Clareburt Swims 4:03.66 400 IM to Break Own New Zealand National Record

2025 SWIMMING WORLD CUP – CARMEL

New Zealand’s Lewis Clareburt enjoyed a top performance during the final day of the Carmel stop of the World Cup, breaking his own national record in the 400 IM with a time of 4:03.66.

Clareburt knocked almost 1.5 seconds off of the record, which previously stood at 4:05.03 from the 2024 World Cup stop in Shanghai.

His performance this morning was good enough for the runner-up spot in the slower heats of the 400 IM, just .56 behind Shaine Casas (4:03.10). Clareburt was seeded 9th in this event coming into the meet, with the top eight seeds racing in the finals session tonight.

Clareburt got off to a slightly slower start than his record-breaking performance a year ago, trailing the record pace by .7 at the halfway mark. He flipped a switch on the breaststroke leg, throwing down a split of 1:07.74 which was 3.43 seconds faster than his breaststroke split a year ago (1:11.17).

Clareburt also shaved five-hundredths off of his time on the backstroke leg, but it was unquestionably his performance during the breaststroke that helped him blow past the national record.
