Lewis Clareburt set a new national record in the men’s 200 IM tonight, taking his New Zealand standard under 1:57 for the first time. He sliced three tenths of a second off the previous record of 1:57.06, which he set at the 2025 World Championships.
He was never far from the medals in this race, touching in third after the butterfly leg in a time of 25.12, then swimming the third-fastest backstroke split at 29.80 to remain in third at halfway. He moved up to second on the breaststroke leg with a 34.20 split, but had Tom Dean and William Petric within a quarter of a second as he turned for home.
Dean looked to be gunning for a repeat of his final 50 four years ago, when he split 27.45 to run down Clareburt and nearly touch out champion Duncan Scott, but this time it was Clareburt who came home strongest. He split 27.65 on the freestyle leg, faster than anyone except 6th-place finisher Lorne Wigginton.
He moved up one spot from four years ago, winning his fifth Commonwealth medal. This is his first silver, with one bronze from the 2018 edition, and two golds and a bronze from 2022.
He moves up to rank 8th in the world this season.

The freestyle leg was the difference between this swim and the former record for Clareburt. He was almost identical across the first 100, a tenth slower on breaststroke, but nearly four tenths faster on the freestyle leg.

Three of Clareburt’s four fastest swims have come in the last 12 months, despite moving away frm New Zealand to train in Nunawading alongside tonight’s fourth-place finisher William Petric. Clareburt clocked 1:57.29 in the semi-finals at the 2025 World Championships before dropping to 1:57.06 in the final, which undercut the 1:57.27 he posted at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. He has a busy week ahead of him with the 200 free, 400 IM, and 200 fly still to come.
He is the defending champion in the latter two, notching an Oceanian record of 4:08.70 in the former at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and running down Chad le Clos to set a new lifetime best of 1:55.60 in the 200 fly.
Clareburt remains ranked as the #3 Oceanian swimmer in history, just 0.08 seconds behind Leith Brodie’s 1:56.69 from the 2009 World Championships. Mitch Larkin owns the Oceanian Record at 1:55.72 which he swam at Australian Trials in 2019.
