Lasco Moves to #3 All-Time in 13-14 200 Back at Middle Atlantic Champs

At the 2016 Middle Atlantic LC Senior Champs, held at Bucknell University, 14-year-old Destin Lasco moved up to #3 on the 200 back all-time list for the 13-14 age group.

Previously at #5 with his 2:05.46 from earlier this year, Lasco dropped a 2:03.28 to jump over Benjamin Ho and Michael Andrew in the all-time list.

Boys 13-14 200 back all-time rankings

  1. Aaron Peirsol, 2:02.78
  2. Ryan Murphy, 2:02.86
  3. Destin Lasco, 2:03.28
  4. Michael Andrew, 2:04.06
  5. Benjamin Ho, 2:04.87

Lasco is now just five tenths off of Aaron Peirsol’s 13-14 NAG record in this event. He also swam a 2:09.16 to win the 200 IM, shooting him up from #51 to #14 on the all-time rankings for the 13-14 200 IM.

Meanwhile, Central Bucks Swim Team’s Allie Szekely was on a tear this weekend, racking up four individual wins in the 100 back (1:02.24), 200 fly (2:17.88), 200 IM (2:18.32), and 400 IM (4:51.31). She felt some heat in the 200 fly and 400 IM, though. Mia Abruzzo, just 13 years old, smashed her personal best by over 2 seconds in the 200 fly to grab 2nd in 2:19.79. In the 400 IM, Szekely battled with Molly Kowal, the latter of which finishing just tenths behind Szekely at 4:51.58.

Molly, and her twin sister Grace Kowal, battled in several events. Grace was 4:58.97 in the 400 IM, and got a win for herself in the 800 free, posting a time of 8:50.49 over Molly’s 8:52.21. The twins met again in the 400 free and 1500 free, with Molly taking the 400 free in a close race (4:21.28 to 4:21.60) and winning more comfortably in the 1500 (16:53.67 to Grace’s 17:11.72). Molly dueled with rising UVA sophomore Vivian Tafuto in the 200 breast, winning it in 2:35.77 to Tafuto’s 2:36.19. Tafuto came back to post a 1:12.42 to win the 100 breast.

Andrew Abruzzo won a couple on the boys’ end, posting an 8:06.71 to take the 800 free easily and then touching the wall at 58.45 to win the 100 back by just one hundredth over CBST’s Connor Killion. Penn Charter’s Reece Whitley had another big win for the boys, swimming a 2:13.34 200 breast to earn the victory by almost eleven seconds. Whitley’s only other swim was prelims of the 100 free, where he swam a lifetime best 53.26

OTHER NOTABLE SWIMS

  • Alex Sumner, just 15, swam a 2:13.61 200 back to knock off Szekely by eight hundredths.
  • Rising Michigan senior Vinny Tafuto won three times, taking the 50 free (23.26), 100 free (51.93), and 100 fly (53.57).
  • 16-year-old Morgan Scott swept the sprint freestyles, going 26.37 and 56.61 in the 50 and 100, respectively, and then winning the 200 free (2:03.93). She scored best times in the 100 and 200 free, and was just .06 off of her 50 free lifetime best.
  • Zach Fong won the 200 fly (2:01.15) and 400 IM (4:31.69), and also placed 2nd in the 200 breast (2:24.23) and 100 fly (54.90).

Anyone know when he’ll turn 15? Any chance he might have time to break Peirsol’s NAG record?

From destin lasco,s photograph, he doesn’t look like he,s gone through puberty yet ( he still looks prepubescent) but he is faster than the women,s world record?

Can prepubescent looking boys swim faster than grown women. Most of the 14 year old boys I know who are faster than the best women already look quite mature eg Michael andrew. But lasco doesn’t look physically mature.

I think the photo is from a past NCAP Invite. The award is the 11-12 high point award.

He had improved a little bit in short course this year, but was still pretty quiet overall. He had decent Junior meet in December. I think he was the one of only a few 14 year olds and he made finals in backstrokes.

I hope he has another big meet this summer where he attempts a few more events, and gets another crack at that NAG record. That would be pretty awesome to surpass Murphy AND Piersol.

But regardless of records and what not, great swim!

Goodness, my longtime favorite US age group swimmer on the men’s side continues his progression.
Very nice to see that.
He had a little bit stalled last year but he’s back this year with already a 5.99s time drop in the 200 back!
Hopefully he swims at US junior nationals.

If someone has a video of that swim, I’m very interested. Thanks.
