Kirkland Mawae, Son of 8-Time NFL All-Pro, Gives Verbal to Wingate

Kirkland Mawae of Crawfish Aquatics will continue the athletic tradition of his family at Wingate University.

Kirkland has some solid athletic pedigree behind him: his dad, Kevin Mawae, was a four year starter at center on the LSU football team and played 16 years in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks, the New York Jets, and the Tennessee Titans.

Kirkland announced his commitment with this tweet:

Kirkland is a solid freestyler. He has been 22.87 in the 5o free, 49.58 in the 100 free, 1:53.74 in the 200 free, and 4:56.37 in the 500.

He will also add depth to the defending Blue Mountain Conference champions and Division II fifth place finishers in the 100 and 200 back.

His 100 back time is 53.02 while his 200 is 1:58.12. He will contribute right away next year with these times. Kirkland and freshmen Brendan Ryan and Stephen Tressler will be the top three backstrokers for Wingate next season.
