Kayla Han Posts 10:04.27 1000 Free, Moves to 4th All-Time in 11-12 Age Group

The senior squads from La Mirada Armada and Team Santa Monica met in a dual meet last weekend. The two teams are both known for their distance squads, which have historically been among the top swimmers in the country. 

During the meet, age-group standout Kayla Han from La Mirada maintained this tradition and threw down two personal best times, moving into the top 10 in 11-12 age group history. 

The 12 year-old Han swam a total of 4 events over the weekend, taking on the 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 1000 freestyle, and 1650 freestyle. 

Han’s best placement of the weekend came in the mixed 1000 yard freestyle, where she finished 5th overall in a time of 10:04.27. For Han, her performance marked a new personal best time, knocking over 8 seconds off of her previous best of 10:12.73. With her time, Han also posted the 4th fastest performance in 11-12 age-group history, coming within .2 of moving into the top 3. 

In the mixed 1650 freestyle, Han posted another personal best time of 17:36.23, knocking over 15 seconds off of her previous best which stood at 17:53.94, to take 11th overall. Her time ranks 76th all-time in the 11-12 age group, making her the fastest swimmer in her age group for this season. 

Han also contested the 200 freestyle and the mixed 500 freestyle. As the only entrant in the 200 freestyle, Han posted a time of 1:52.74, coming within a half second of her best time of 1:52.30. In the 500 freestyle, Han finished 5th overall, dipping under the 5:00 minute barrier with a time of 4:58.97, a few seconds shy of her best time of 4:53.61. 

Several other distance standouts also threw down personal bests during the meet. In the 1650 freestyle, 13-year-old Zach Tower from Team Santa Monica dropped almost 24 seconds to win the event in a time of 16:08.04. Tower also swam a personal best of 9:43.67 in the 1000 freestyle, dropping about 10 seconds off of his best time. 

Behind Tower, 15-year-old Colin Kim cut 6 seconds off of his best time in the 1650, touching in a time of 16:19.05. Kim also sliced 6 seconds off of his best time in the 1000 freestyle, coming in 2nd with a time of 9:46.95.

Other Highlights: 

  • 16-year-old Luca Samanta finished 3rd in the boy’s 200 freestyle with a best time of 1:51.19, dropping almost a second off of his previous best. 
  • 13-year-old River Cheng dropped 2 seconds en route to victory in the 100 backstroke, posting a time of 54.51. 
  • 17-year-old Isabelle Shapiro won the women’s 400 IM with a best time of 4:25.90, dropping over 6 seconds.
