Katie Ledecky Eyeing End of Season: “I always like to see where I can get in training, too”

2026 Pro Swim Series – Indianapolis

Video captured by Anya Pelshaw.

Katie Ledecky rounded out the Pro Swim in Indianapolis with a win in the 800 free, turning in a time of 8:12.87 that, in her words, “was ok, wasn’t much of anything special”. As the distance world record holder approaches yet another post-season with Team USA, she said something that showed just how much of a student of the sport she is.

Ledecky views the end of the season as a time to enjoy the process, not just focus on the times she goes at the big meet. She’s also pushing herself in practice, seeing how fast she can go in the training leading up to whatever end-meet is coming. Perhaps at Pan Pacs, we will get to hear about some of those rested practice times.

At this point Ledecky really is an Olympic swimmer. Her whole focus is just the Olympics every cycle- imagine being an absolute LOCK in multiple events even three years, two years, etc out from the games!

Just to clarify, when you write LOCK, you mean qualifying, right? (Vice winning in LA28?)

This place cracks me up.

Could at least one downvoter clarify then?

Random question for the milers since Ledecky is a miler and is inspiring this question – I never once swam the mile, what do you think about? Do you really think about your pacing and your stroke and stuff the whole time? Or do most milers drift off somewhere mentally for about half the race and lock back in at the end?

Does a 64 year old / 24:57 1500m qualify to respond? 😂

I am 68 and thinking about doing my first ever 1500m, so I am interested in your response. We did a 1650 for time during a workout in March, and it felt pretty good. I drafted off the lady in front of me for the first 800 or so, so that might have helped.

To answer honestly, yes, we think about things, specifically race strategy – negative split, descend by 500’s, and even weirder things like don’t look at the counter until there’s a “1”. Short course, I hated looking at the counter until it was 21 or 41. It really depends on the meet and at what point of the season you are swimming it. I know for me, it was also a battle mentally with intrusive thoughts and having choice words for my coach who was constantly on the side of the pool telling me to go faster. 🙁

I liked looking at the counter tbh. It really helped me keep pace, and seeing it not being shaken was a relief that I was going what I needed to go

Music gets stuck in my head a lot, so definitely always had a song playing in my head! Also I would keep an eye on the lap counters and use that to keep pace or go faster.

I’d say you have to be pretty locked in the mile. For me personally, I am constantly thinking about staying on pace, keeping stroke count down and maintaining race plan.

It is good to have a plan, and different things to think about at different stages, certainly.

I wonder what goes on in her mind after all these years at the top. We need a KL youtube channel

I hope I got this right:

She first broke 4min in 2013.

How many years will she reach from first sub4 to last? 15+ years of being in sub4 shape?

The mind boggles.

Please, by all means, list the reasons that you think she is overrated.

People really do just be saying things.

I assume it’s “she only swam one stroke.”

I’m rather new to swimming, but I cannot understand this “only one stroke” argument that I constantly see.

As if “versatility” somehow automatically tr*mps anything that a distance swimmer might do.

So sprinting is more important?

Or should we have 400m fly? 1600m IM?

Sheesh.

She’s overrated because she excels in one stroke over 2 distances with limited competition. When before an American starting dominating these events was the greatest swimmer in the world determined by one stroke and the boring af races of 800 and 1500 meters. She’s the greatest distance swimmer in history….not more than that.

I’ll retract somewhat and state that overrated is probably not the right word. It’s more about what one prioritizes for determining what the best ever means. She’s an amazing athlete and a great person; I don’t personally think the limited stroke set and particular distances where she won almost all her Olympic medals warrant the unconditional crowning she is given.

Only somewhat related but in the Unfiltered Waters UF cook-off (Katie and Bobby vs Kieran and Nesty), Kieran said he was one of the “four Florida pros”.

I know I’m missing something super obvious but who’s the fourth? I thought it was four including Caeleb before he left. Weyant was in the vid but I think she’s in Sarasota, right?

I assumed Emma was still there, but I guess I don’t know that for a fact.

Pretty common for Florida pros to rep their home clubs.
