Kate Douglass continues to display her elite versatility, having taken wins in the 200 Breast (2:22.01) and 100 Free (53.45), both of which came in the same session as a semi-final swim. Douglass is no stranger to doubles, having successfully swam many over the course of her pro career.
However, with the Pan Pacific Championships only having 4 days, Douglass will have to make some tough decisions. Her potential finals lineups by day could be:
- Day 1: 50 Fly, 400 Mixed Medley Relay
- Day 2: 100 Free, 100 Breast
- Day 3: 100 Fly, 400 Free Relay
- Day 4: 200 IM, 50 Free, 200 Breast, 400 Medley Relay
As you can see, Day 4 looks especially daunting (and most likely, unrealistic). Douglass will be competing at the China Open later this month, where she hopes to test out a few doubles and see how viable placing Top 3 in them is.

It’s funny that as age groupers, we swim 2-4 races per day per meet, whereas doing a double as a pro swimmer is a huge deal 😂
Big difference between age groupers and professional swimmers competing at the biggest event of the year
I disagree. We see pros (and college swimmers) doing individual events and relays in the same session plenty of times at championship meets.
What a wild comment. It’s SO much harder on your body at this age (college and up) vs an age grouper. Yes we see them do it, but it is a bigger deal and takes some strategy and preparation.
What I would expect:
Day 1: 50 Fly, Mixed Relay maybe
so many factors could impact this relay (how Torri and Kate are looking, how the men’s Back and Breast are looking, etc.)
Day 2: 100 Breast and 100 Free in the morning but only 100 Breast at night?
Put up a good time in 100 Free in the morning to get on the relay the next night but focus on 100 Breast for Finals? They’re back-to-back (with just Men’s 100 Breast in-between) so would be a tough finals double, but if she makes both A finals then it could be tough to say no to.
Day 3: 400 Free Relay

jk. Regan would also have the 200 Back on Day 3. Still don’t know if Kate would swim 100 Fly though.
I think that’s reasonable. I also think we (I) forget that one event a day (or even 2-3 events over a 4 days meet) + relays is normal for most athletes.
Because Kate is so versatile, I tend to think she will want to swim more events, but she may just focus on a 2-3 with this condensed schedule
omg I got a Coleman response. I’ve peaked
She’ll do the 50 free because the US women can win the medley relay easily.
