Duke’s Johnston, Willborn Advance to 3-Meter Finals

INDIANAPOLIS – Freshman diver Mackenzie Willborn and former Blue Devil Abby Johnston will both compete in the women’s 3-meter springboard finals Sunday at the 2015 USA Diving Winter National Championships, held at the IUPUI Natatorium. Willborn and Johnston qualified for the event finals after advancing through two rounds of diving Friday in Indianapolis.

A 2013 graduate of Duke, Johnston enters the event finals in fourth place after earning a score of 291.15 in the preliminaries and 313.95 in the semifinals. Her highest scoring dive of the day came in the final round of the semifinals, when she was awarded 72.00 points on a forward 2 ½ somersault with one twist. With a total score of 605.10, Johnston sits just 4.60 points shy of third place heading into Sunday’s competition.

Willborn rounded out the day in 12th place with a combined score of 534.55. The Blue Devil rookie garnered an award of 268.80 in the preliminaries after scoring 58.80 points on a reverse 2 ½ somersault on her fourth dive. She went on to net 265.75 points in the semifinals to solidify a spot in Sunday’s finals.

Sunday’s 3-meter finals are scheduled for a 1 p.m. start. Live video will be available.
