JL Mann Sweeps Girls, Boys Titles At South Carolina 5A Division 1 Championships

It was a repeat for the JL Mann boys and redemption for the JL Mann girls at the South Carolina High School League’s 5A Division 1 State Championships. 

The JL Mann boys team successfully defended last year’s state title, while the girls squad also took the top spot after finishing as the runner-ups last season in what is South Carolina’s largest classification. 

Girls’ Recap

JL Mann won the team title primarily on depth, given that its only event winner was junior Claire Burns in the 200 IM with a time of 2:03.55. 

The individual standout of the meet was Ashley Ridge senior Grace Marsaa, who has committed to Queens University ofin Charlotte. 

Marsaa set a new state record in the 100 breast, winning with a time of 1:02.82 to break the previous record of 1:03.07 set in 2016 by Sydney Baker. Marsaa also won the 50 free in a time of 24.32. 

Other individual standouts were Wade Hampton juniors Abby Schneider and Emily Schneider, and Anna Ray of River Bluff. 

A. Schneider won the 200 free in a time of 1:53.61 and swam the lead-off leg on Wade Hampton’s winning team in the 400 free relay (3:36.92). E.Schneider anchored that winning relay team and also won the 500 free in a time of 4:58.00. 

Ray swam lead-off on River Bluff’s winning team in the 200 medley relay, which won in a time of 1:50.25. Other team members were Ellie Wells, Caroline Wells and Keelyn Davis. Ray also won the 100 back in a time of 58.20. 

Cane Bay’s quartet of Mia Stephan, Josie Mullen, Fiona Haefner and Madeline Degeorge won the 200 free relay in a time of 1:40.87. 

Other individual winners were Emma Dent of Clover in the 100 fly (57.80) and Bella Strawn of Byrnes in the 100 free (52.32).

Boys’ Recap

The JL Mann boys won two events, first when Cade Taylor won the 100 back in a time of 52.00. Taylor then swam anchor for JL Mann’s team in the 400 free relay, which won in a time of 3:16.41. Other team members were Matthew Bulia, Elijah McDowell and Counts Plyler

The individual star was Luke Green of Wando, who is an Air Force commit. Green won the 100 free (45.51) and 200 free (1:39.61), and also swam the lead-off leg on the Wando 200 free relay that was victorious in a time of 1:27.98. 

Brody Johnson, Paddy O’Connell and Roman Haecherl were the other team members. 

Haecherl also won the 100 fly in a time of 51.19. 

West Ashley’s team of Daniyal Eldridge, Sean Groeber, Gabe Smith, and Reid Scott won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:36.54. Groeber also added an individual win, taking the 100 breast in a time of 57.44.

Other individual winners were Finn McEnroe of Spartanburg in the 200 IM (1:55.21), William Alexander of Spring Valley in the 50 free (21.08) and Jordan Hewett of Sumter in the 500 free (4:46.62).
