Javier Acevedo Smashes Second National Mark In Two Days

For the second time this weekend Ajax swimmer Javier Acevedo broke a Canadian national record at the short course Age Group International, this time taking down the 100m backstroke mark.

Right from the get-go Acevedo was in front, tearing through the first 50 in a quick 26.07. Just like in his 200m backstroke from Saturday night, Acevedo managed to control his speed on the last half of the race and come home with an almost identical split.

Finishing the race with a 26.26, Acevedo put together a 52.33 to take just about half-a-second off Russell Wood’s 2011 time of 52.81.

Going into this meet Acevedo was just off Wood’s record with a personal best time of 52.90.

With that performance Acevedo now has full control of the backstroke national age group records in the 15-17 category. On Saturday night he broke Nicholas Sinclair’s six-year-old record in the 200m backstroke in order to win gold.

Acevedo will need to keep on shaving time off his personal best if he wants a shot at Jake Tapp’s senior national record of 50.60 from 2009.

Prior to the 100m backstroke final Acevedo competed in the 100m freestyle. There he finished second overall with a time of 49.37. Former University of Toronto swimmer Chris Manning dropped a 49.29 to take the win. Acevedo tried to come back on him during the final 50, but ran out of pool towards the end.
