LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Iona University Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Team took to the road Saturday to face the Broncs of Rider University for the first time head-to-head since 2006. The match-up of MAAC foes saw the host take the men’s 170.5-108.5 as the Iona women prevailed 180-117.
The win for the Iona women raised their record to 2-0 as the men go to 1-1 on to season. The two teams split the opening 200-yard Medley Relay with the Iona women’s quartet of Raegan O’Brien, Francesca Fields, Victoria Mordaunt and Nia Thomas winning by 2.31 at 1:49.05. The Iona men ‘s 200-Medely Relay team of Kieran Egan, Mac Buchen, Wyatt Julian and Nate Wales were .55 short of Rider at 1:32.21.
The Iona women won 9 of the 14 individual events with wins on the day Marissa Hengesbach in the 200-free (1:57.97) and 200-Butterfly (2:12.59); Raegan O’Brien in the 100-Back (58.75); 200-Back (2:08.24); Fields took the 100-Breaststroke (1:08.51); Sydney Cronin grabbed the 200-Breaststroke (2:27.70); Kate Kennedy won the 500-Free (5:15.59); Mordaunt added a win in the 100-Butterfly (59.31) and Brennyn Veit took the 200-Individual Medley (2:14.38).
The Iona men grabbed six gold on the day with Harry Platt taking the 200-Free (1:43.04) and the 100-Free (46.84); Wyatt Julian posted a .11 win in the 100-Back (51.33); Kieran Egan cruised to a 3.5 second win in the 200-back (1:53.31); Max Buchen touched first in the 200-Breaststroke (2:07.34) and 200-Indvidual Medley (1:58.89).
Both the iona women and men closed out the meet with a pair of big relay wins as the women’s team of O’Brien, Elissa Vaher, Hengesbach and Kennedy combined for a come-from-behind win by .54 at 3;39.42. The Iona men with Egan, Elijah Decasseres, Wales and Platt touched first by .51 winning at 3:06.85.

Iona returns home for a Homecoming weekend on Friday (diving only) as they face off with Sacred Heart University and Wagner College in a Women’s and Men’s meet, with the swimming portion on Saturday.

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider University women’s swimming and diving team opened the season Saturday afternoon in Coppola Pool, falling to Iona 180-117. The Broncs fall to 0-1, while the Gaels improve to 2-0.
The Bronc women won five events in the meet.
Casey McLaughlin (Ramsey, NJ/Ramsey) got the Broncs on the board with a win in the 1,000-free, touching the wall at 10:51.06, 13 seconds faster than the competition.
The Broncs got a one-two finish in the 50-free with Donja Tripp (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame) and Sonya Mishakova (Bali, Indonesia/Australian Independent School Bali) swimming 24.11 and 24.92. Mishikova later earned a win in the 100-free, swimming 54.46.
In the diving well, the Broncs swept the 3-meter with Campbell Dopler (Bettendorf, IA/Bettendorf), Karyn Creelman (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin), and Adriana Raymond (Southington, CT/St. Paul Catholic) scoring 215.85, 202.50, and 200.93, respectively. Dopler and Creelman also went one-two on the 1-meter with scores of 211.13 and 203.78.

– Lea Opdyke (Ocala, FL/West Port) was third in the 200-free.
– Casey Morgan (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) finished third in the 100-back.
– Ava Smith (Vineland, NJ/Cumberland County Tech) and Megan Smith (Philadelphia, PA/Nazareth Academy) were two-three in the 200-fly. Ava Smith was also third in the 100-fly.
– In the 200-back, Morgan and Aubree-Claire Alewine-Frasier finished two-three.
– McLaughlin added a third-place finish in the 500-free and the 200-IM.

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ– The Rider University men’s swimming and diving team opened the season Saturday afternoon, defeating Iona 176.5-119.5. It was the season opener for the Broncs, who move to 1-0, while the Gaels drop to 1-1.
Rider won nine events in the meet.
To open the meet, Riley Rowan (Simpsonville, SC/Clonlara), Matthew Borovik (Deerfield, IL/Deerfield), Tivon Benjamin (Palm Bay, FL/St. Anthony’s Secondary School), and Cesar Alvarez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/The Ashton School) got the Broncs the win in the 200-medley, swimming a combined 1:31.66.
Ethan Rogowski (Waterford, NY/Shenendehowa) and Filippo Sala (Davie, FL/Nova Southeastern University School) carried the momentum into the 1,000-free, swimming one-two with times of 10:06.21 and 10:09.04.
Billy Ruddy (Newton, NJ/Kittatinny Regional) won the 100-breast with a time of 55.77.
In the 200-fly, Luke Mesco (Mullica Hill, NJ/Mother of Divine Grace) and Joey Milhomens (Wolcott, CT/Wolcott) swam one-two with times of 1:56.76 and 1:57.53. Mesco also won the 500-free in the with a time of 4:49.27.
Ruddy then led a one-two finish in the 50-free, swimming 21.04 with Alvarez going second in 21.20.
The diving well was a strength for the Broncs with Stavros Xantheas (West Orange, NJ/West Orange) and Steven Figueroa (Whittier, CA/La Serna) finishing one-two with scores of 276.45 and 242.78 on the 1-meter. The duo also swept the 3-meter with scores of 263.10 and 237.98.
Benjamin and James Bugianesi (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) got the one-two finish in the 100-fly, touching the wall at 50.29 and 52.76.

– Dawid Turos (Riverwoods, IL/Deerfield) finished second in the 200-free.
