Internationals Help FIU (Women) Over FGCU

The FIU women hosted FGCU for senior day on Saturday, January 22nd. This was FIU’s first meet of 2022. FGCU is coming off of a loss against Miami on January 12th. FIU won the meet in a score of 190-109. FIU exhibitioned all of their non top swims after the 50 freestyle.

Both programs share similarities. They are both home to women’s only programs. They also are both home to many international swimmers. FIU’s roster this season has 18 international students on it, and FGCU’s roster has 11. 

The international swimmers led the way for FIU on Saturday. Freshman Christie Chue from Singapore won both the 100 (1:02.54) and 200 (2:16.92) breaststrokes as well as the 200 IM (2:06.50). Chue holds some of the top times in the NCAA this season in the breaststrokes. Her 100 breaststroke time of 59.88 places her #24 in the NCAA this season and is second out of Division I mid-major programs. Her 200 breaststroke time of 2:08.66 is #16 in the NCAA this season and first out of Division I mid-major programs. 

Senior Stephanie Hussey from Canada won both the 500 (5:08.04) and 1000 (10:32.13) freestyles. This was her second time swimming the 1000 all season. Her best time in the events this season are a 4:58.30 in the 500 and a 10:22.52 in the 1000. 

Junior Maha Gouda from Egypt swept the diving events. She won the 1 meter in a score of 322.95 and the 3 meter in a score of 307.20. 

FGCU was led by sophomore Emma Hixenbaugh who won the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:08.30. Her season best in the event is a 2:01.22.

Fifth year Petra Halmai also led the way for the Eagles. Halmai placed second in the 200 breaststroke (2:17.29) and 200 IM (2:09.92) as well as third in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:04.41. Halmai is tied for #30 in the NCAA this season in the 200 breaststroke with her time of 2:09.78 from midseason.

  • 100 backstroke: Michaela Trnkova, FIU (56.78, from Czech Republic)
  • 200 butterfly: Kasia Kolodziej, FIU (2:05.37, from Poland)
  • 50 freestyle: Elinah Phillip, FIU (23.91, from England)
  • 100 freestyle: Sara Gyertyanffy, FIU (51.25, from Italy)
  • 100 butterfly: Julia Miranda, FIU (54.48, from Brazil)
  • 400 freestyle relay: FIU (3:27.65)
