Hugo Gonzalez Wins Spanish National Title and SC Euros Berth In 200 Breaststroke

2025 Spanish Short Course Championships

Paris Olympic finalist Hugo Gonzalez had a tough summer 2025, failing to make Spain’s Worlds team in his backstroke events. Today, he turned his fortune around by making an international squad – in the unlikely event of 200 breaststroke.

Gonzalez won Spain’s 2025 short course national title in the 200 breast in a time of 2:06.10, a time swift enough to qualify for the country’s European Short Course Championships team.

Gonzalez is not new to competing breaststroke events. However, a national title and a six-second personal best in the event places him in new territory. Moreover, Gonzalez scratched the 50 backstroke, which has traditionally been his best stroke, to go all-in on the 200 breast tonight.

Of note, 26-year-old Gonzalez left his alma mater, UC Berkeley, in May, to train with Bob Bowman in Austin. This apparent new emphasis on breaststroke could be a result of this coaching change.

Spain will send two prominent swimmers to Euros in the 200 breast: Gonzalez and reigning short course world champion Carles Coll Marti, who will be a podium favorite in Lublin. Coll is not swimming this weekend, as he already secured his spot from his top eight finish in Singapore.

Gonzalez was in fast company with other event winners tonight. At the start of the session, Diego Mira unleashed a new Spanish record in the 400 IM to punch his ticket to Euros in Lublin. His 4:04.43 winning time knocked down Alan Cabello’s supersuited 4:05.09 mark. It also sliced over four seconds off his 4:08.63 entry time.

Three freestylers found their way on to the Euros team. Carla Cardin notched her spot with a 4:05.27 this morning before adding and placing third at night. The final winner, in 4:06.76, was Ainhoa Campabadal, also punching her international team ticket. Finally, Mario Mendez had a big swim in the fastest heat of the men’s 800, posting a five-second pb of 7:43.93 to keep his short course season going.

Mariana Pacheco De Sousa (Cunha) isn’t Spanish; she’s a Portuguese swimmer (as listed in the results) and his PB and NR in the SCM 100 fly is 58.01. Moreover no mention of the great time of 15 year-old Irene Ciercoles in the women’s 50 back (26.92) or Luca Hoek’s 21.47 lead-off in the 4×50 free mixed.
