Fluidra Race Video of the Week: ASU’s Adam Chaney Drops 1:39.59 200 Back Best Time Against USC

Arizona State graduate senior Adam Chaney has been one of the standouts early in the 2025-26 season, quickly making an impression on the Sun Devils after transferring over from the University of Florida.

Chaney, who did not compete collegiately in 2024-25, posted the NCAA’s top time in the 100 back (44.46) in early October in a dual meet against UNLV, and then last weekend against USC, he had a similarly impressive swim in the 200 back.

The 23-year-old has primarily focused on the 50 and 100 free and back throughout his career, but expanded his range up to the 200-yard distance against the Trojans, and it paid off.

Chaney dominated the event, clocking a time of 1:39.59 to drop more than six seconds off his previous best and climb to #2 in the country so far this season.

Chaney’s previous best time stood at 1:45.74, which was set the last time he raced the event nearly three years ago at the 2022 Georgia Fall Invitational.

In the NCAA this season, Chaney only trails Texas junior Will Modglin (1:39.41), while Virginia’s David King is the only other man to dip under the 1:40 barrier thus far.

2025-26 NCAA Rankings, Men’s 200 Backstroke (SCY)

  1. Will Modglin (Texas), 1:39.41 – Texas v. Tennessee
  2. Adam Chaney (ASU), 1:39.59 – ASU v. USC
  3. David King (Virginia), 1:39.86 – UVA v. UNC
  4. Tommy Hagar (Alabama), 1:40.25 – Alabama v. Texas
  5. Keaton Jones (Cal), 1:40.30 – Cal v. Stanford

In addition to winning the 200 back, Chaney led off one of ASU’s 200 medley relays (20.54) and split 41.80 on their victorious 400 free relay as the team rolled to a 197-103 dual meet victory over the Trojans.

Chaney and the Sun Devils will face off with Tennessee, Virginia and Michigan at the CSCAA Power 4 Dual Meet Challenge next week, running from Nov. 21-23 in Knoxville, Tenn.
