History repeated itself last weekend in Fort Lauderdale, as Gretchen Walsh obliterated the world record in the women’s 100 butterfly in the same pool she did 12 months prior.
After becoming the first woman to break the 55-second barrier at the 2025 Fort Lauderdale Pro Swim Series in 54.60, Walsh unleashed a time of 54.33 at the 2026 Fort Lauderdale Open, knocking 27 one-hundredths off her previous mark.
The swim came 364 days after she set the previous record.

Already the only woman under the 55-second barrier, the performance makes Walsh the fastest woman in history by more than a second, with former world record holder Sarah Sjostrom ranking #2 all-time in 55.48.
