WASHINGTON (January 31, 2026) — Howard University women’s swimming & diving delivered a commanding performance Saturday evening, defeating Catholic University of America, 223–47, in a nonconference dual meet at Burr Gymnasium to close the season.
Howard opened the meet on the boards where Iala Cropper (Rochester, N.Y.) captured first place in the 1-meter dive with a score of 172.55, setting the tone for the afternoon.
The Bison continued their strong start in the pool, winning the 200-yard medley relay as Chanice Posada (Houston), Alyssa Napier (Wilmington, Del.), Brooke Whitt (Chicago) and Gabrielle Vickles (El Dorado, Trinidad & Tobago) touched first in 1:45.90.
Howard controlled the distance events, led by Tiara Jackson (Los Angeles), who won the 1000-yard freestyle in 11:00.08 while Kali Garcia (Altamonte, Fla.) added a victory in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in 5:15.13.
Sprint success followed, beginning with Posada claiming the 50-yard backstroke in 24.61. Whitt continued her standout performance by winning the 50-yard breaststroke in 26.11 and later securing first place in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.64.
Napier earned the victory in the 100-yard freestyle, touching first in 53.03, while Zuilda Nwaeze (Columbia, Md.) captured the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.24. Howard also picked up wins in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard IM and 200-yard freestyle, showcasing depth across all disciplines.
The meet concluded with a Howard victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay, as Vickles, Mia Patton (Nassau, Bahamas), Julianna Gibson (Elk Grove, Calif.) and Kaelyn Mitchell (Mobile, Ala.) posted a winning time of 3:56.34 to close out the sweep.
Next, the Bison head to Geneva, Ohio where they compete in this year’s NEC Championship (February 17-20).
WASHINGTON (January 31, 2026) – Howard University men’s swimming & diving turned in a dominant showing Saturday afternoon, defeating Catholic University of America, 187–81, in a nonconference dual meet at Burr Gymnasium to close out the regular season.
Howard opened the swimming portion of the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay, as Adam Diaz (Manhattan, N.Y.), Mark Brown (Greensboro, N.C.), Ameer Bashir (Hartley, Del.) and Darien Williams (Philadelphia) combined for a first-place time of 1:57.14.
Distance standout Jack Barr (Nassau, Bahamas) delivered one of the top performances of the night, winning the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:12.70 before adding another victory in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:55.67.
Howard controlled the sprint events, highlighted by Brown capturing the 50-yard breaststroke in 28.92 while Taj Benton (Baltimore) won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.20. Ty Triche (Humble, Texas) followed with a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 50.80.
The Bison continued to rack up wins in the stroke events. Bashir earned the victory in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.83 while Williams claimed first in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in 1:02.63. Howard also picked up victories in the 50-yard backstroke, 200-yard freestyle and 50-yard butterfly.
Howard closed the meet with a strong finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay, as the quartet of Benton, Williams, Mason Green (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Ibrahima Diouf (Arlington, Va.) posted a winning time of 3:11.23, sealing the team victory.
Next, the Bison head to Geneva, Ohio where they compete in this year’s NEC Championship (February 17-20).

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Catholic swimming and diving team traveled to neighboring Howard on Saturday afternoon. The women fell to the Bison, 223-47, and the men were defeated 187-81.
On the men’s side, the Cardinals opened the meet with a podium-finish in the 200 Medley Relay. The team of Teddy Tsakumis, Sean Kelty, Vincent Wills, and James Caldwell placed second, touching the wall in 1:35.70.
John Holler picked up a second-place finish in the 1000 Freestyle, clocking a time of 10:12.99. Shawn Mashburn added a strong showing in the 200 Freestyle, finishing fourth in 1:48.97, while also placing second in the 500 Freestyle with a time of 4:58.42.
The Cardinals found success in the backstroke events, led by T. Tsakumis, who claimed first-place in the men’s 100 Backstroke with a time of 50.80. Wills followed with a third-place finish in 57.30. On the women’s side, Logan Shields placed second in the 50 Backstroke, clocking a time of 29.23.
Gabriel Hermann took home the gold in the men’s one-meter diving event, finishing with a score of 259.65.
Tara Wiarda picked up a podium finish in the 50 Butterfly, earning second-place with a time of 28.66. Izzy Giannetto followed closely, placing third in 28.99.
T. Tsakumis captured first in the men’s 100 Individual Medley, posting a time of 53.38, while Delainey Brandt led the women in the 100 IM, touching third in 1:03.73.
Catholic closed the meet in the relays, with the women’s 400 Freestyle Relay team of Katie Nalepka, Keriann Collison, Giannetto, and Shields finishing fourth with a time of 3:56.34. The men’s relay of Holler, Mashburn, Daniel Green, and Wills placed third in 3:21.29.
Up next, the Cardinals will travel to Baltimore, Md. to face off against their conference opponents at the Landmark Conference Championships. The meet will kick off on Thursday, February 12, at the Mangione Aquatic Center and conclude on February 15.
