Hosszu, Cseh, Gyurta among usual suspects on strong 23-person Hungarian Euros team

Following its national championships this past weekend, Hungary has selected its official roster for the European Championships in Berlin, naming 23 swimmers to the team.

Katinka Hosszu, Laszlo Cseh and Daniel Gyurta are among those on the squad. All three won gold medals at the 2012 European Championships, where Hungary’s historically strong team led all nations with 26 total medals, 9 of them gold. That trio combined for 7 of the 9 golds, with Hosszu and Cseh each winning three apiece.

Gyurta will face a bit more of an uphill battle in his medal quest, though, as he announced this weekend that he won’t be defending his 200 breaststroke title, focusing instead on the sprint breast races before picking the 200 back up next summer. Gyurta won the 200 breast European title in 2012 and 2010, plus picked up Olympic gold in the race in 2012 as well.

Other returning gold medalists are distance freestylers Gergo Kis (800 free gold, 400 and 1500 free silver in 2012) and Boglarka Kapas (800 free gold in 2012).

Hungary will be away from home for these European Championships for the first time in awhile. In a unique scheduling quirk, Hungary has hosted 3 of the past 4 European Championship meets. Budapest hosted in both 2006 and 2010, and the 2012 Championships were relocated to Debrecen, Hungary after the selected host, Antwerp, Belgium, fell through.

These Championships will take place in Berlin, Germany beginning August 13th.

The full Hungarian team rosters are below. These include both pool and open water swimmers. The only swimmer doubling in both disciplines is Daniel Gyurta’s younger brother Gergely, himself a returning bronze medalist in the 1500.

You can find the official release of the rosters on the Hungarian swimming website, in its original Hungarian, by following this link.

I continue my little recap of the French 14/15 age group championships.
And don’t tell me most of the times are slow. I know that.
Again, we don’t have a lot of young great talents.
And most of the coaches don’t push the juniors very hard in training here in France.
So the rare young great talents we have generally develop and mature later.
Except amazing natural talents like Agnel, Manaudou brother and sister or Muffat.

Day 3
