Harvard Men Cruise To Season-Opening Win Over UMass

AMHERST, Mass. – Harvard Men’s Swimming and Diving opened its 2025-26 season on Friday night and emerged with a 220.50-77.50 road win at in-state foe Massachusetts. The Crimson moved to 1-0 with the decision, while the Minutemen dropped to 0-2.

How It Happened

  • The Crimson opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay, which was a sign of things to come. Oliver PilkintonJoshua ChenMaro Miknic and David Greeley completed the race in 1:29.41, ahead of teammates Adriano AriotiSonny WangDavid Schmitt and William Browne (1:30.25).
  • Harvard went to on win the next 15 events, starting with William Mulgrew’s victory in the 1,000 free (9:06.54).
  • Greeley led a group of three Crimson to finish 1-2-3 in the 200 free. The senior won the event in 1:38.62, ahead of Ognjen Pilipovic (1:39.63) and Pablo Martinez (1:41.44).
  • Arioti was victorious in the 100 back, finishing the race in 48.43. Browne and Evan Croley tied for third place with identical 50.73 times.
  • Chen (100 breast; 54:40), Schmitt (200 fly; 1:48.24) and Wang (50 free; 19.82) all returned to the pool after swimming the 200 medley relay and won their respective events before all eyes turned to diving, where Rem Turatbekov won the three-meter competition (361.05).
  • Wang (100 free; 43.76), Arioti (200 back; 1:46.17), Chen (200 breast; 1:57.50) and Mulgrew (500 free; 4:27.79) added a second individual victory to their ledger before Miknic won the 100 fly in 48.06.
  • Raphael Tourette won the one-meter diving event, cruising to victory with a score of 352.65. His score was nearly 40 points better than runner-up Carson Harrington of UMass (317.33).
  • Richard Poplawski III won the final individual race of the night – the 200 IM – with a time of 1:54.31.
  • The Crimson put the finishing touches on the evening by winning the 200 free relay (Wang, Marre Gattnar, Miknic, Greeley) in 1:20.35.

Up Next

Harvard returns to action on Friday when it faces Dartmouth and Cornell in Hanover, New Hampshire. The meet is set to begin at 3:30 p.m. ET.

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts men’s swimming and diving team fell to Harvard, 220.5-77.5, on Friday evening at the Joseph R. Rogers Jr., Pool.

Junior Jude Boukarroum placed second in the 1,000 freestyle with a season-best time of 9:54.87, as sophomore Zach Szabo took second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.04 Freshman Hudson Bawduniak followed with a second-place finish of his own in the 100 breaststroke with a career-best time of 57.17.

Senior Sammy Quigg swam into third in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.72, before taking second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 45.14.

In the 200 backstroke, freshman Liam Hickey grabbed the bronze medal with a season-best time of 1:52.01, while Bawduniak picked up his second medal of the day, securing the silver in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:07.56. Freshman Chase Dai had a season-best time of 1:56.15 in the 200 individual medley to earn third-place.

During the relay events, the team of Szabo, Dai, Bawduniak and Quigg swam a combined time of 1:32.44 to place third in the 200 medley relay. The 200 freestyle relay team consisting of Hickey, freshman Macek Vandermolen, senior Aidan Shepston and Quigg earned second with a combined time of 1:23.18.

On The Boards
Sophomore Alex Kreidler scored a career-best six-dive total of 337.58 in the three-meter dive, placing third in the event.

In the one-meter dive, freshman Carson Harrington claimed second with a career-best total of 317.33, while Kreidler followed in third with a career-best score of 314.93.

The men’s team returns to the pool, along with the Minutewomen, on Saturday, November 8, for a home meet against Boston University at the Joseph R. Rogers Jr., Pool. The meet begins at 11 a.m.
