Gainesville Girls, Doral Academy Boys Earn Florida 3A State Titles

Gainsville’s women’s team and the Doral Academy Charter High School men’s teams were crowned the 2015 Florida High School 3A State Champions over the weekend. Gainesville won by 30 points over Bartram Train and Doral Academy edged Fort Lauderdale by nine points.

Aleana Kraus lead Gainesville to the state title with four victories over the course of the weekend. She swept the 200 and 100 freestyles in 1:47.86 and 50.78, respectively, before leading her team to victories in both freestyle relays.

The relay team of Savanna Buch, Kraus, Yvette Smith, and Jessie Jones combined to win the 200 freestyle relay with a final time of 1:38.87. On the final event of the meet, the team of Monona Martin, Courtney Bryant, Smith, and Kraus won the 400 freestyle relay with a 3:30.95.

The girl’s 500 freestyle was arguably one of the fastest events of the meet with five swimmers finishing under five minutes. Fort Meyers senior Kendall Bryant won with an impressive 4:47.45.

  • 200 IM – Summer Stanfield – 2:03.31
  • 50 Free – Abby Garner – 23.97
  • 100 Fly – Kayla Tennant – 55.42
  • 100 Back – Helen Heuberger – 56.89
  • 100 Breast – Morgan Ayers – 1:04.81

On the men’s side, Doral Academy used their depth to earn the state championship title. The only event they won was the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Adrian Moya, Adrian Aguilar, Alex Arrieta, and Diego Faucher combined to post a 1:25.23 to win their only event.

Charlotte’s Hans Schroeder was the only swimmer to double up over the weekend. He posted a 1:38.94 to win the 200 freestyle and later won the 100 backstroke with a 48.70.

Belen Jesuit opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:34.60. The final relay was won by a third team, Fort Lauderdale. The touched in 3:05.14 to win the event, but it wasn’t enough to push them past Doral Academy. Doral Academy needed to finish sixth or higher to maintain their lead over Fort Lauderdale.
