Lucas Kelly of Chandler, Arizona, has verbally committed to swim for DI Florida Atlantic University in the 2020-2021 season. FAU is a team in the NCAA’s Conference USA.
Of his announcement, Kelly says,
“I am so stoked to announce my commitment to swim at Florida Atlantic University! I am so blessed to be able to go D1 with the best team there is! Can’t wait to be #winninginparadise. So grateful for my family, friends, coaches, and God helping me through this process! Go Owls!”
Kelly is a senior, swimming both for Chandler High School and for Mesa Aquatics Club. With the former, he placed fifth in the 200 fly at the 2019 Arizona Interscholastic Division II State Championship with his best time of 1:52.70. At the same meet, he placed third in the 100 fly, reaching a personal best of 50.10 in prelims and finishing with a 50.58 in finals. With MAC, he competed at the 2019 Arizona Short Course Senior Open Championships, B-finaling in both the 100 and 200 fly. At the 2019 Arizona Long Course Senior Open Championships, he B-finaled again in both events.
Were Kelly an Owl during the 2018-2019 season, he would have been the second fastest on the roster in the 100 fly, roughly 0.2 seconds behind then-sophomore Skyler Hamilton. Kelly also would’ve been the fifth fastest in the 200 fly, fourth in the 100 free and seventh in the 200 free. If he had competed at the 2019 Coastal Collegiate Sports Association Championships, he would have B-finaled in the 100 and 200 fly as well as the 100 free.
