PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Fairfield University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swept Providence College on Friday afternoon with the women winning by a 162.5-137.5 score and the men taking a 178-116 count. The men’s team picked up nine first-place finishes while the women’s team garnered five top finishes.
Joseph Stewart and Alexey Belfer both picked up a pair of victories to account for nearly half of those individual wins. Stewart started his night by touching the wall first in the 200 fly by posting a time of 2:07.40 and in the 400 free with a time of 4:03.90. Belfer swept through the 50 free (23.15) and the 100 free (51.78). Five other Stags earned a top finish in their respective event, starting with Joey Nizzardo’s first-place swim in the 800 free (8:37.30). He was also part of a sweep of the 400 free as Stewart won the race followed by Tim Regan’s time of 4:08.89 and Nizzardo’s time of 4:13.26.
Regan also notched a win in the 200 free with his time of 1:55.61 while Hans Lim registered the best time in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.50). Sam Tonole and Noah Duncan each placed first and third, respectively in the two diving competitions.
On the women’s side, Alison Sposili garnered the first victory of the dual meet when she covered her distance of 100 yards in the breaststroke by completing the swim in 1:17.23. Lia Oppenheim secured a first place point total in the diving competition with 188.10 points. Erini Pappas continued her successful start with another first-place finish in the 200 back, posting a time of 2:20.18. Cailey Stockwell also earned a victory in the 200 breaststroke, finishing the race in 2:42.81 while Sposili was the runner up in the same event.
The Stags were also successful in both relay races beginning with the 200 medley relay. The women’s team, which was comprised by Pappas, Sposili, Maggie O’Donnell, and Olivia Thompson took the number one placement with a time of 2:02.94. The men’s 200 medley relay team secured the runner up spot in the race (1:44.84) behind the efforts of Oliver McLaughlin, Hans Lim, Evan Fair, and Alexey Belfer.
Both teams also recorded the top times in the 200 free relay with the men’s program registering a time of 1:34.95 behind Patrick Gill, Evan Fair, Joseph Stewart, and Alexey Belfer. The women’s team also corralled the 200 free relay as Olivia Thompson, Erini Pappas, Sydney Scalise, and Serafina Viola representing the Stags. The relay team earned the victory by completing the course in 1:49.85.
The Stags return to the pool when they host the College of the Holy Cross on Saturday, October 29. The dual meet will take place at the RecPlex Pool beginning at 1 pm.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College swimming & diving programs hosted Fairfield in the 2022-23 home opener on Friday, Oct. 28 at Taylor Natatorium in Providence, R.I. The Friars set three school records during the meet, including new marks in the men’s 200-meter medley relay and the women’s 200-meter freestyle relay. Kevin Hood also set an individual school record in the 200-meter breaststroke.
The 200-meter medley relay team was comprised of McGovern Brown, Kevin Hood, Ryan Sharp and Will Layden. The group finished the race in a time of 1:43.95. The previous record was set in 2021 by Brown, Hood, Matt Michaels and Brian Cantin (1:46.52).
Hood, who also owns the school record in the 100-meter breaststroke, now owns the top spot in the 200-meter breaststroke as well. He finished the event in a time of 2:24.74, which was good for second place. Parker Keller posted the previous school record in 2021 with a time of 2:26.71.
On the women’s side, Sally Alrutz, Courtney Reilly, Grace Erickson and Taylor Loud teamed up for the record-breaking performance in the 200-meter freestyle relay. The group finished second in the event with a time of 1:50.03. The previous mark was set in 2019 by Jennifer Bankes, Katie Thornton, Margie Keenan and Lauren Zawacki (1:50.25).
Several Friars also posted first-place finishes in the meet vs. Fairfield.
For the women, Annie Gathof scored the top spot in the 800-meter freestyle (9:23.28), the 200-meter butterfly (2:26.96) and the 400-meter freestyle (4:34.31). Erickson took home first in the 200-meter freestyle, with a time of 2:11.59. Alrutz claimed victory in the 100-meter backstroke (1:06.14). In the 50-meter free, Loud hit the wall in a tie with Fairfield’s Olivia Thompson in a time of 27.35. Reilly claimed victory in the 100-meter freestyle (1:00.29). Elizabeth Glasspool topped the field in the 100-meter butterfly (1:07.25). In the 1-meter diving event, Mal Moriarty recorded 180.67 points to beat out her competitors.
For the men, Brown posted a first-place finish in the 100-meter backstroke (59.21). Noah San Vicente finished first in the 200-meter backstroke (2:08.96). Sharp won the 100-meter butterfly (57.83).
Fairfield claimed team victories against the Friars upon conclusion of the meet. On the women’s side, the Stags won the meet 162.5 – 137.5. The Fairfield men posted a 178-116 win over the Friars.
Providence returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 29 against Iona. The diving events are scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m., while the swim events are slated for 1:00 p.m.
