Dressel Dissects Pro Swim Performances in Austin: “Really happy”

2026 PRO SWIM SERIES – AUSTIN

Video captured by Anya Pelshaw.

Caeleb Dressel was back in action at the Pro Swim in Austin, one of his first meets since announcing he was training with Steve Jungbluth in Jacksonville. Dressel said this was his ‘final benchmark’ for the first phase of his training for this season, which focused on technique and fitness. He will now review his swims and start focusing more on ‘race prep’.

Overall, Dressel seemed quite pleased with his meet, especially his 100 free in prelims, which was the first time he’d raced that event since the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

If Dressel is to return faster than he was in Paris, expect him to be slower in the upcoming meets than he was in the lead-up to Paris.

Leading up to Paris, he was going 51-low to 50-high and 21-high consistently in the 50 and 48-low in the 100 free.

This is because he had a bit LESS muscle mass and power than he did leading up to Gwangju or Tokyo, so he had less muscle fatigue to deal with.

A faster-than-Paris Dressel will have more muscle mass, more power, and probably more fatigue, so slower in szn times with a huge drop at Nationals.

2015-Phelps-esque Nationals incoming?

I’m going to wait till the 2026 selection meet for sc worlds to expect anything (if not 2027 if he skips sc worlds). Assuming he’ll still be a little off this summer and thats just part of the process.

His fly always comes back faster than his free.

He should be happy.

Olympic trials is still around 30 months away.

I hope he sticks to his strengths: the 100 fly and 50 free; lighten the load by omitting the 100 free (and relays the 100 free entails).

In Paris the decision to use Dressel on the prelims of the mixed Medley relay was a bad call. He had the 100fly semi that night and didn’t advance. He had a good chance to medal in the 100fly individual.
