Diehl Sweeps Sprints as Barrington Wins Rhode Island Girls’ States

Barrington High School swam to the state title at the 2020 Rhode Island Girls State Championships, 75.5 points ahead of 2019 champion La Salle. State Record holder Sydni Diehl earned another state title in the 50 free. Though she was off her record from 2018, Diehl won handily in 23.85. She swept the sprint titles, dominating the 100 free in 51.42.

The Barrington girls set a new State Record in the 200 free relay. Emma DiGiacomo led them off in 24.89. Freshman Zoe Webster was up next in 25.59, followed by a 24.42 from Rachel Baker. Diehl anchored with a 23.41 split as they set the mark in 1:38.31.

They set another State Record in the 400 free relay. Webster led off there in 54.54. Garin Stone put up a 54.10 on the 2nd leg, handing off to Baker (54.18). Diehl closed in 50.81 as they won the race with a record of 3:33.63. That tied their own mark set at the 2019 state meet.

St. Marys Bay View’s Gianna Spremullo won a pair of individual titles. She was over 2 seconds ahead of the field in the 200 IM, winning the race in 2:04.83. Spremullo, a Tulane commit, returned for the 100 back, breaking 56 for the first time to take gold in 55.93.
