Day 5 Relay Lineups: Franklin, Sjostrom In 800 Free Relay Heats

2016 RIO OLYMPIC GAMES

The official lineups are out for the women’s 800 free relay prelims this morning, with no real surprises in the lineups.

Heat 1

  1. Netherlands (M.Steenbergen, E.Vermeulen, A.Kneppers, R.Neumann)
  2. Russia (V.Andreeva, A.Openysheva, D.Mullakaeva, V.Popova)
  3. Australia (L.Neale, B.Barratt, T.Cook, J.Ashwood)
  4. Italy (A.Mizzau, M.De Memme, C.Masini Luccetti, F.Pellegrini)
  5. Sweden (L.Hansson, M.Coleman, I.Marko-Varga, S.Sjostrom)
  6. Japan (C.Igarashi, R.Ikee, T.Aoki, S.Mochida)
  7. Canada (K.Savard, T.Ruck, E.Overholt, K.Goss)
  8. Slovenia (J.Segel, A.Klinar, T.Pintar, T.Oder)

Heat 2

  1. Germany (A.Bruhn, L.Kullmann, P.Schmiedel, S.Kohler)
  2. France (C.Balmy, C.Hache, C.Bonnet, M.Fabre)
  3. Great Britain (S.O’Connor, G.Coates, H.Miley, C.Hattersley)
  4. United States (A.Schmitt, M.Franklin, M.Margalis, C.Runge)
  5. China (A.Yanhan, Z.Yuhan, D.Jie, W.Shijia)
  6. Spain (M.Costa Schmid, P.Castro Ortega, F.Gallardo Carapeto)
  7. Brazil (M.Lyrio, J.Cavalheiro, G.Roncatta, L.Oliveira)
  8. Hungary (E.Verraszto, A.Kesely, B.Kapas, K.Hosszu)

Of note for the Americans is the inclusion of Trials runner-up Missy Franklin, who will look to redeem herself after a disappointing performance in the individual 200 free. Franklin missed the final after winning bronze at the World Championships last year.

Joined by Allison SchmittMelanie Margalis and Cierra Runge, the top two splits from this morning are expected to join Katie Ledecky and Leah Smith in the final.

Other teams who will definitely make substitutions tonight for the final (if they qualify) are the Australians, Canadians, and the Dutch.

Australia will definitely look to add Emma McKeon, taking over for whoever has the slowest leg this morning. She won bronze in the individual event last night.

This Canadians will look to add both Brittany Maclean and Penny Oleksiak tonight for the final, while the Netherlands will most likely add Femke Heemskerk.

Also of note, Olympic gold medalists here in Rio Sarah Sjostrom (SWE) and Katinka Hosszu (HUN) will anchor their teams relay, as will Federica Pellegrini (ITA).

Finals Lineup? Lead-off Schmitt, Smith, Dirado (fingers crossed because none of the non-Schmitt swims were much faster than her in season 1:57.7), and anchor Ledecky?

I tend to agree. I’d swim Dirado tonight. She’ll be movtivated to swim for Gold in a event where she doesn’t have to face Katinka Hosszu. Franklin, Margalis, and Runge had fairly pedestrian swims even on rolling starts and when they knew they were competing for tonight. Dirado had that 1:57.70 in early June. I’d let her swim.

Jack Conger, because coaches were mean to him

Maclean is ill for Canada. Overholt is the last minute sub in the 3rd leg.

Somewhere deep down, I really want Franin to split a 1:56 low or 1:55 high

Not even deep down. How can anyone not be rooting for her. She has sacrificed a ton for the USA. It’s almost tragic that she’ll never recoup all she lost by swimming NCAA

Not to be mean but what exactly did she sacrifice for the USA??

Dirado held off MM last night on that 2iM pretty well, personally Smith Diardo whoever wins this morning and Ledecky should be the call but hey we’ve seen some pretty wild relay calls so far by the Americans

Will be interesting to see how the US morning team goes and who makes the evening. Franklin’s position looking fairly tenuous as I would expect Smith to be 1.56low at worst. If she isn’t below 1.56high, I think she may be sitting out tonight.

China will bring in Shen who swam a 1.55.25 last night

If CAN can negotiate qualifying with this line-up, their inclusions may have them “tickling” the podium spots tonight given their

Is this morning line-up risky for AUS ? Moderately so, beyond McKeon & Barratt they fall away to 1.58 swimmers. The rules lock them into having to use Neale who’s record is dodgy, maybe the calculation of use her now rather than in… Read more »

Franklin most likely got off of London in 2012 and Worlds 2013 and just got too ahead of herself turning pro. She will probably come back in 2020, these games will hopefully open her eyes to make some sort of change. O hope she is successful in the relay today.

Missy and Yi She Wen are having a pity party in the village. They are both done on the world stage unless they want to go swim with 2016 coach of the year Shane Tussup

I think Yi Shewen’s fall from grace is much more pronounced than Franklins

One bad Olympics doesn’t mean your career is over. Dana Vollmer completely missed making the 2008 team after making it in 2004 and she bounced back quite well in 2012.

I don’t think it is a problem with her training. It is her back. Hasn’t she lost flexibility since her injury in 2014? Things were going so well until then. But she hasn’t been the same since that injury. Maybe she should take a break after Rio and try to deal with this if possible. Then come back months later or so. 2020 I have not lost hope for another 4 golds.

You are forgetting about her unbelievably fast 1:39 at 200y in March 2015. I think that even now Ledecky or Schmitt cant approach it. Her Kazan performance at freestyle wasn’t her best but at her high level. What has been happening since then is a mystery.

Saving DiRado for the finals.

Franklin will get a relay gold for her prelim swim (which is good for her corporate brand).

Dirado is not phelps. I think they should have let Dirado or Biesel swim this AM heat…they know what Missy can do(or not do)

I assume Beisel hasn’t been in the water much since her 400 IM since that was her only event. At Trials she commented that she was looking forward to being done on the first day and being able to be a team cheerleader for the rest of the meet.

This also gives Leah one fewer race before the 800 prelims tomorrow, where she will need to be on her game. This is very smart.
