Connor Townson Commits to Tufts with Times Just Off Team Records

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

A senior at Seton Hall Prep School in West Orange, New Jersey, Connor Townson has announced his college decision for next fall. Townson will make the short drive up the east coast to Medford, Massachusetts where he will spend the next four years swimming at Tufts University. Townson currently swims for the Lakeland Hills Family YMCA, as well as for his high school.

” I am honored and excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Tufts University. I’d like to thank my family, friends and coaches who have supported and encouraged me over the years. GO JUMBOS!”
Earlier this winter, Townson competed at the Winter Junior Championships-East at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. At that meet, he raced in both breaststroke events and both IM events, hitting lifetime bests in all four events. His top finishes came in the longer races, with his 2:03.53 earning him 44th in the 200 breast and his 4:02.85 finishing 58th in the 400 IM. He also touched in the 100 breast in 57.39 and 1:53.10 in the 200 IM.
This summer, Townson competed at the Futures Championship meet in Richmond, qualifying for finals in two different events. In the 200 breast, after qualifying for finals in 6th in 2:24.13, he took nearly two seconds off of his lifetime best to finish 4th in 2:21.74. He also added a best time of 4:41.36 in the 400 IM.

Top SCY Times

  • 100 back – 52.10
  • 200 back – 2:00.16
  • 100 breast – 57.39
  • 200 breast – 2:03.53
  • 200 IM – 1:53.10
  • 400 IM – 4:02.85

Tufts is historically one of the top Division III swim teams in the country, with the men taking 10th at the most recent NCAA Championships back in 2019. In 2020, the Jumbos took second at the NESCAC Men’s Swimming and Diving Conference Champioinahipa, falling to only Williams. The team did not have a conference or NCAA Championship during the 2020-21 season.

This season, the program has gotten off to a strong start, with the men taking second at the MIT Invitational, falling to only the host team. This season, the team’s breast and IM groups are led by a wealth of freshman talent. Both breaststroke and IM events are led by a different freshman, with freshmen holding the top-2 times in multiple events as well. The team’s roster currently lists 25 underclassmen on the team, meaning Townson will have multiple years of overlap with many of the school’s top swimmers.
This season, Townson’s lifetime best would be leading the Jumbos in the 200 breast by over a second. His time of 2:03.53 would have also earned an NCAA B-standard in the event as well. That 200 breast time would also put him just .4 off the program record, a time of 2:03.15 swam by Tar Tar Jaursinchai in 2020.
Tufts is currently ranked as the 11th best men’s team in Division III according to the latest CSCAA DIII Poll. That ranking is a six-spot jump from where they were ranked at the beginning of November.
