UC San Diego’s Cohn, Daley Named SDHOC Stars

SAN DIEGO – UC San Diego swimming standouts Michael Cohn and Colleen Daley were announced Thursday as a San Diego Hall of Champions (SDHOC) Star of the Month for February.

The two All-Americans excelled in leading the UCSD men and women each to their eighth straight Pacific Collegiate Swimming and Diving Conference (PCSC) titles at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park, Feb. 12-15. Both are headed to Indianapolis, Ind. this Sunday, March 6, alongside 17 teammates, for the NCAA Division II Championships at the IU Natatorium on the IUPUI campus, March 9-12.

Cohn won three individual events for the maximum 96 points en route to PCSC Male Swimmer of the Meet honors. The Solana Beach product and second-year Triton from Grossmont College was fastest in the 500-yard freestyle, 200 free and 200 backstroke, breaking his own school record in the latter on the final night. He also broke the program mark in the 200 free (1:37.39) while leading off the first-place, school- and meet-record 800 free relay (6:35.00) during the first session. His 1:44.92 in the 200 back qualified him automatically for the NCAA Championships.

Daley, a fourth-year senior and second-time co-captain, achieved her preseason targets of breaking school records in both the 50 and 100 freestyle (22.98 and 50.29, each in prelims), later sprinting to a pair of wins in finals. The Sacramento native also anchored the 200 and 400 medley and 400 free relays to first-place finishes in school-record times, with another win in the 200 free relay. The 400 medley relay lowered the previous program standard, from 2009, by over a second.

Cohn and Daley give UCSD four San Diego Hall of Champions Stars of the Month for the 2016 calendar year. Basketball stars Jamie Katuna and Adam Klie were January selections.

The San Diego Hall of Champions honors outstanding athletes from San Diego, as well as athletes who have achieved stardom for local teams.
