Carson Foster of the US has announced on Instagram that he is scratching prelims of the men’s 400 IM. Foster states that he “tweaked a tendon” in his ankle before the final of the men’s 200 IM.
“The stories we’ll tell one day about this meet…
Definitely a frustrating way to end the season. Before the 200 IM final, I tweaked a tendon in my ankle which has made kicking and turning very difficult. Due to this, I have pulled out of the 400 IM.
Despite the circumstances, I am always grateful for the opportunities to represent the US. One more day of competition and I’m ready to be a cheerleader in the stands!”
Foster also was a late scratch for the final of the men’s 200 IM. He was the #8 seed heading into the final but was the #3 seed coming into the meet. His only individual final of the meet came with a 5th place finish in the 200 butterfly.
He was one of the medal contenders for tomorrow’s 400 IM as he was the #2 seed with a 4:07.64 entry time. Only World Record holder Leon Marchand of France was seeded ahead of Foster with a 4:02.95.
In addition to scratching the final of the 200 IM, the injury also explains why Foster was not included in the US men’s 4×200 freestyle relay that finished 4th in a 7:01.24, just 0.26 seconds off of making the podium. Foster did not swim in prelims or finals of the relay on Friday, the day after the final of the 200 IM. He was 5th in the 200 freestyle at US Summer Nationals in a lifetime best 1:45.45.

Oh god I did this mid-swim and it hasn’t healed 6 years later
Its too bad. Carson is one of my favorite swimmers, not just for talent, but he’s a really good guy. Nice person.
Bronze in this event might not even break 4:10
Marchand gold and Matsushita silver are prob locks in the final now. Hope Carson gets better
Next season of Netflix – Trainwreck, the 2025 World Aquatic Championship
Carson might have to start thinking beyond swimming and following in his brother’s footsteps. Going to be a long slog to LA to compete for minor medals. He’ll probably do it, but I have to imagine he is at least questioning it now. With his event schedule, he is probably not generating a lot of income in prize money. I presume he is receiving some income from his sponsors and stipends from USA swimming, but not sure how lucrative that all is. Not sure if he generates incomes from social media but probably not much. His IG following is like 50K which is significant but not as massive as others.
“minor medals” is one of the dumbest phrases the commentors of this site have created.
I think the phrase “minor medals” was around well before SwimSwam (or any of us) existed.
Haven’t been posting cause I’ve been too present, distracted by the moment. Sorry but thank you.
Like kitten.
Carson is in worse position than Regan with no clear path to gold in his best events. Still could be valuable contributor on 4×200 relay
Fourth best 200 IMer in his own training group. Might want to start looking at other training options.
Is this a serious comment?
Why wouldn’t it be? Not everyone looks at life thru burnt orange tinted lenses. What part of what I sad wasn’t factual?
Considering that the coach of that training group is arguably the best ever at training athletes of Carson’s specialty, your comments seems short-sighted.
Ok, where would you say Carson, AN IMER, should go to train?
Doesn’t matter he is still in top 2 Americans
