In a stellar performance in Otopeni tonight, Carlos D’Ambrosio raced to victory in the boys’ 200 freestyle in 1:45.15, breaking both the Championship Record and his own Italian National Record in the process.
D’Ambrosio shaved .08 off of his lifetime best, shattering the Championship Record in the event. He knocked over a second off that standard, which previously stood at 1:46.18 and was set by Romania’s David Popovici in 2022.
A breakout sprint star of the senior World Championships last month, D’Ambrosio had just set the Italian Record in Singapore with a time of 1:46.23 during the semifinals of the 200 before placing 6th overall.
D’Ambrosio was out fast in 24.28, the fastest opening 50 in the field tonight. He built up a significant lead by the halfway point, splitting 50.89 at the 100 mark to put him a full second ahead of Austria’s Christian Giefing, who turned 2nd in 51.89. D’Ambrosio carried his momentum all the way through, coming home in 54.26 to blast into the wall well ahead of runner-up Xu Haibo of China (1:46.67).
