LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women’s swimming & diving team wrapped up its first weekend back after the semester break with a 185-115 win over La Salle Sunday at Kinney Natatorium. Bucknell maintained the lead throughout the meet and won 10 of 16 events to improve to 4-4 in duals this season. Senior Esme Hunter won two events and also swam the first leg of Bucknell’s winning 200 medley relay team.

It was a busy weekend,” said head coach Dan Schinnerer, who took the team up to West Point, N.Y. on Saturday to take on Army before returning to Lewisburg Sunday to face the Explorers. “We would’ve liked to have been more competitive with Army, but we’re happy with the performances coming off a break. Something we emphasized was starting our January better than we were in November and December.”

Along with its 10 wins, Bucknell saw runner-up finishes in nine events, and the Bison finished 1-2-3 in four races. Bucknell had built a lead of more than 60 points by the sixth event of the meet and clinched it by the 12th.

Hunter captured first-place finishes in the 100 backstroke (57.25) and the 100 freestyle (52.84), and she also swam the fourth leg of Bucknell’s 200 freestyle relay team.

Another outstanding performance was had by sophomore Kyla Kelly, who captured a win the 400 IM (4:31.57) to lead a trio of Bison. Rookie Kelly Byrne came in second in the event, and Skye Sunderhauf followed in third. Kelly added two runner-up finishes in the 200 butterfly (2:08.16) and the 200 backstroke.

The 200 butterfly was another race in which the Bison dominated. Sunderhauf took first with a 2:08.14, narrowly edging Kelly, and Rylie Giles rounded out the top three with a 2:10.08.

Bucknell claimed the top four spots in the 200 freestyle. First-year Sydney Dettmann touched the wall first with a 1:55.98, followed by Caroline McGann (1:56.29), Kayla Lichtner (1:58.26) and Ashley Piacentino (1:58.85).

Bucknell went 1-2-3 in the 500 freestyle as well. Giles took first with a 5:11.89, followed by McGann (5:14.18) for her second runner-up spot, and Virginia Hastings in third (5:15.61).

Rounding out Bucknell’s first-place finishers were Hanna Bingley in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.06) and Talia Bugel in the 200 backstroke (2:07.44).

“Today was about continuing to build. The back-to-back meets is a challenge, but that’s part of the preparation,” said Schinnerer. “We saw good things from both teams.”

Bucknell is off next weekend before returning to Kinney Natatorium on Saturday, Jan. 27 to host Lehigh. The Bison will celebrate Senior Day during the dual against the Mountain Hawks and will recognize seven graduating members of the women’s team and four from the men’s team for the home finale.

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men’s swimming & diving team bounced back from its loss to Army on Saturday with a 179-121 victory over La Salle at Kinney Natatorium Sunday. The Bison won nine of 16 events, finished 1-2-3 in three races, and saw another program top-10 performance in the diving portion. Bucknell improved to 5-3 (4-3 PL) with the win.

The Bison and Explorers went back and fourth over the first few events of the meet before Bucknell took the lead for good during the 100 freestyle, where Justin DiSanto captured one of his two wins. The junior posted a 46.11 and was followed in second place by classmate Chris Kopac (46.41). Drew Greene and Colin Smith also scored in the 100 free, giving the Bison the overall team lead for good after the two schools sat locked at 75-75 heading into the event.

It was DiSanto’s second win of the day after he touched the wall first in the 50 freestyle with a 20.98. Like the 100 free, the Bison took the top two spots with Finn Russell trailing in second with a 21.45.

Senior Chris Fabian also posted two individual wins on Sunday, placing first in the 100 backstroke with a 51.29 and in the 200 backstroke with a 1:53.05., narrowly beating La Salle’s Tarik Gusic in both events. Gusic finished the 200 backstroke in 1:53.39 and the 100 backstroke in 51.43.

William Shoemaker won the 1000 freestyle with a 9:43.93 in what was the first of three 1-2-3 finishes for the Bison. He was followed in the distance race by Kopac (9:47.10) and Riley Twiss (9:53.14). Shoemaker was also part of Bucknell’s 1-2-3 finish in the 500 freestyle, taking second behind Alex Crossing (4:42.35) and ahead of third-place Braden Beagle (4:46.21).

Bucknell took the first four spots in the 400 IM. Andy Dorsel led the pack with a 4:06.13, followed Twiss (4:09.87), Kevin Crane (4:12.99) and Crossing (4:14.75).

Rounding out the Bison winners were Shane Wynne, who took the 200 butterfly with a 1:50.99, and John Gehrig, who won the 100 butterfly with a 48.86.

Jack Krug, who moved from 10th to ninth in the Bucknell record book with his 1-meter dive at Army Saturday, made another move up to sixth all-time with his 277.95 on Sunday. He placed third in the meet with the score.

LEWISBURG, Pa. – La Salle men and women’s swim and dive traveled to face the Bucknell Bison in a dual meet Saturday, but came up short. The men lost 179-121 and the women 185-115. Both teams will be back in action on Saturday against Fordham for senior day.

HOW IT HAPPENED (MEN):

• This was the first action for the men since late November, and although they came up short, they performed well against a tough Bison squad.
• The 200-medley team of Drew Bowen, Andrea Savoca, Felix Jedbratt, and Carter Perkins took the top spot in a time of 1:31.73.
• Jedbratt is returning after a stint of being injured, and he returned to the meet with vengeance. The sophomore took his second victory of the day in the 200-yard freestyle, clocking in a time of 1:41.73.
• Standout freshman Andrea Savoca continues to impress in the breaststroke events, swimming to a top finish in the 100-yard with a time of 56.51.
• On the boards, Sam Henninger stood out in the one-meter dive. The graduate student secured a first-place finish with a score of 321.53. Lucas Dekaney finished right behind him with a score of 315.53.
• Savoca swam to his second first-place finish of the meet in the 200-yard breaststroke. He did so in a time of 2:05.59.
• Henninger and Dekaney repeated their performances in the three-meter dive finishing first and second, respectively. Henninger dove to a score of 297.68 and Dekaney 274.58.
• Another Explorer relay team took first in the 200-freestyle. Felix Jedbratt, Tarik Gusic, Caleb Ingham, and Carter Perkins swam to first place in a time of 1:23.90.

HOW IT HAPPENED (WOMEN):

•  To begin the meet, the team of Lauren Fenn, Carlota Ungo, Tori Fenn, and Toni Rafferty finished second in the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:46.59.
• In the 1000-yard freestyle, Raven Domingo took second place. The junior finished in 10:51.07.
• Rosalia Marin Martinez helped the Explorers to a second-place time in the 100-yard backstroke. The sophomore from Spain finished in 59.16.
• Ungo found her second second-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:07.85.
• Much like every meet prior, Rafferty took the top spot in the 50-yard freestyle. The senior finished the event in 24 seconds even. She finished the 100-yard free in second place in a time of 52.96.
• In the 200-yard breaststroke, Ungo finished in first, her first top finish of the meet. The Spaniard did so in 2:23.52.
• Tori Fenn finished in the gold spot in the 100-yard butterfly. The time for this first-place finish was 57.61.
• Tiffany Brawn swept in the diving events for the women. She finished the one-meter dive with a score of 254.85 and the three-meter dive with a score of 244.35.
• Another Explorer relay team finished on top. The team of Emma van Selm, Toni Rafferty, Tori Fenn, and Lauren Fenn swam the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:36.79.
