QUEENS, N.C – Georgia Tech swimming and diving returned to competition on Saturday in a dominate way. The women were victorious against Queens (NC), the men also picked up a wins against Queens (NC) and Gardner- Webb. 

The men secured a dominate victory over Gardner-Webb, 217-44. Adding to their success, the Jackets claimed victory over Queens (NC),167-95. 

Tech had multiple athletes earn multiple wins throughout the 28-event meet. On the men’s side, Mert Kilavuz championed two events, the 1000 Y Free (9:25.04) and 500 Y Free (4:29.33).  Nils Bognar also had success  for the Jackets in the 200 IM (1:50.18) and the 200 Back (1:47.32). The men also claimed several first-place finishes from Batur Unlu (200 Y Free), Antonio Romero (200 Y Fly), Julian Killius (200 Y Breast), and Stephen Jones (100 Y Breast). 

On the women’s side, McKenzie Campbell championed two events, the 200 IM (2:04.49) and the 200 Butterfly (2:03.08). Sabyne Brisson found success in the 200 Y Breast (2:17.29) and 100 Y Back (1:03.45). Sophie Murphy also picked up wins in the 200 Y Free (1:51.37) and 500 Y Free (5:04.11). 

The women also picked up wins from Vivien Rothwell 100 Y Back(56.14), Zora Ripkova 100 Y Fly (55.50), and Kendall Chunn 200 Y Back (2:02.22) 

Both the men and women found success in their respective relays. The women’s 200 Free relay (Anna Hadjiloizou, Zora Ripkova, Sophie Murphy, Jillian Ferari) finished with a first-place time of 1:33.79. For the men, the 200 Medley Relay (Berke Saka, Joao Caballero, Leandro Odorici, David Gapinski) finished in the top spot with a time of 1:29.13.

Georgia Tech will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 26 in the McAuley Aquatic Center as they take on South Carolina.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Queens University of Charlotte men’s and women’s swimming program honored their nine seniors — Balazs BereczReece GallagherFoster HeasleyDavid HjortAndreas MarzYannick PlasilDanielle MelilliEden Pescara, and Sophia Lange — in their record-breaking attended Senior Day tri-meet against Georgia Tech and Gardner-Webb on Saturday, Jan. 13. With fans meeting the Levine Aquatic Center’s full capacity, the meet was eventually streamed on the Evans Video Board inside the facility.

On the day, the Royals won eight events against the top-25 ranked ACC team in Georgia Tech and ASUN foe in Gardner-Webb.

In the 200 yard medley relays to start the meet, the women’s squad of Maren PattersonAnnika HuberMaddie Foster, and Danielle Melilli took home an early first-place win with a time of 1:42.66.

Sophia Lange would take two solid swims on her senior day with a first-place swim of 10:20.94 in the 1000 yard free and a second-place swim of 5:04.41 in the women’s 500 yard freestyle.

The Royals would next find their way on the podium with a second-place finish in the women’s 200 yard freestyle, as Abigail Zboran swam a time of 1:51.68. Other podium finishes before the first break included Daniel Meszaros for third-place in the 200 yard freestyle (1:38.87), Patterson with second-place in the women’s 100 yard backstroke (56.38), Huber with a second-place finish in the women’s 100 yard breaststroke (1:03.77) and senior Andreas Marz with a time of 49.45 in the men’s 100 yard backstroke.

Noah Beladi would next swim a winning time of 55.95 in the men’s 100 yard breaststroke for Queens, while rookie swimmer Zboran swam a 2:04.46, good for second place in the women’s 200 yard butterfly event. Zboran would snag another second-place showing in the women’s 200 yard IM with a time of 2:05.31.

The 50- and 100- yard freestyle standouts — Melilli and Matej Dusa — soon came out victorious in their events. Senior Melilli snagged a 23.04 in her 50 while Dusa took home a 19.84 finish in his 50. Melilli (50.91) and Dusa (43.65) also came out with wins under their belt in the 100 yard freestyle events.

Queens whipped up multiple more second- and third-place finishes in later events — Haley Ross in the women’s 200 yard backstroke (2:02.95), Marz (1:47.47) and Caden Fritz (1:48.43) in the men’s 200 yard backstroke, Huber (2:18.63) and Berecz (2:02.96) in the 200 yard breaststroke events, Foster (56.33) in her 100 yard butterfly event, Conner Wang (49.49) and Plasil (49.65) in the men’s 100 yard butterfly, and Berecz (1:51.44) in the men’s 200 yard IM.

Finishing out the meet, the Royals went out with a bang with impressive showings in the 200 yard freestyle relay events. The women took home a time of 1:33.96 (Melilli, Ryley Heck, Patterson, Foster) good for second place, while the men took home the one-two finish with times of 1:19.83 (Dusa, Meszaros, Nien Levy, Wang) and 1:21.60 (Jackson Vineyard, Fritz, Stamatis PaleocrassasJonathan Henschel).

“Our seniors truly shined in this day against ACC and ASUN competition,” Senior Associate Head Coach Jon Lau said. “They led the way as they have the last four years.  Our underclassmen also stepped up, showing our depth as we look ahead to the championship phase of the season. There are big things ahead.”

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In front of a Saturday morning capacity crowd at the Levine Aquatic Center on the campus of Queens University of Charlotte, the Gardner-Webb men’s swimming team squared off in a Tri-Meet against two formidable foes as the Runnin’ Bulldogs swam against ASUN power Queens and nationally ranked Georgia Tech of the ACC which is No. 22 in the December CSCAA Division I Top 25 Poll.

Against Queens, Gardner-Webb was outscored 201.00-60.00 by the host Royals while the No.22 ranked Yellow Jackets outscored the ‘Dawgs 217.00-44.00.
There were 14 total events in the men’s Tri-Meet which opened with the 200 Yard Medley Relay. The ‘Runner Bulldogs quartet of senior Landon Clark, sophomore Justin Bender, junior John Cass and freshman Jacob Jenson finished in fourth place with a time of 1:32.98. Gardner-Webb’s foursome of senior Bryan Dunne, freshman Daniel Bennett, senior Kaiden Gonser and junior Zuri Ramsey followed in 1:37.65 to take fifth place. Georgia Tech won the event in 1:29.13.

Senior Garrett Despres had a strong showing in the 1000 Yard Freestyle for the ‘Dawgs as he placed third in 9:46.14.

Other bright spots in the pool for Gardner-Webb on Saturday morning, Jensen (20.89) was fifth in the 12-man field in the 50 Yard Freestyle. Bennett (2:09.20) was seventh in the 200 Yard Breaststroke. Cass finished seventh in the 100 Yard Butterfly while freshman Luke Weber (4:46.90) was seventh in the 500 Yard Freestyle.

Up Next: The Runnin’ Bulldog will get back in the water on Saturday February 3rd as Davidson visits the Bost Swimming Pool for Senior Day at 11:00 AM.
