TOLEDO, Ohio – The Bowling Green women’s swimming and diving team won the Battle of I-75 with a 227-124 victory over Toledo on Saturday morning, marking the Falcons’ first dual-meet win over the Rockets since Jan. 22, 2022.
Bowling Green carried momentum from Friday night into the morning session, opening the day with a win in the 400 medley relay. The Falcons’ A squad of Emily McNicol, Lauren Jablonski, Grace Bodrock and Samia Becdach touched first in 3:44.64, while the B team placed third.
“I was impressed with how our ladies came out this morning, competing at 9:30 a.m. with high energy and the ability to continue what we started last night,” head coach Tanner Barton said.
The Falcons dominated on the boards, sweeping the top three spots in the one meter dive. Evie Long posted a lifetime-best 278.48 to win, securing her a rare fourth NCAA zone qualifying score. Sadie Dempz followed with a personal-best 266.48 to earn her first zone cut.
“Two divers got NCAA zone cuts, which is very exciting,” Barton said.
In the pool, Maddie Bond captured the 200 individual medley in 2:06.75, while Bridget Kurtzweil added a third-place finish. Karina Solera and Bodrock finished second and third in the 100 butterfly, and Becdach placed second in the 100 freestyle.
McNicol continued her strong meet with a win in the 100 backstroke, touching first in 55.48, with Bella Treib close behind in second. Jablonski claimed the 100 breaststroke title in 1:03.81, as Bond added a third-place finish.
The meet concluded with the 400 freestyle relay, where Bowling Green’s A and B squads placed second and third.
Barton credited the team’s approach and senior leadership for the result.
“When we’re swimming fast and having fun, we can do some incredible things,” Barton said. “The seniors had not beaten Toledo in a dual meet throughout their college career. They did not want to go 0-4. They wanted to come out on top and end their time at BG with a victory over their rival.”
The win capped the Falcons’ most successful regular season in five decades. Bowling Green now turns its focus to the Mid-American Conference Championships, scheduled to begin Feb. 25 in Akron.
