Binghamton Sweeps St. Bonaventure As Bearcat Women Pull Out 121-120 Triumph

VESTAL, N.Y. – In its first swimming & diving meet of 2023, Binghamton swept St. Bonaventure in a dual meet on Saturday at the Saunders Aquatic Center. The Bearcat women won 121-120 while the men were victorious by a 148-95 margin.

Binghamton posted three double winners – all on the men’s side. Sophomore Elijah Lanfear captured the 50 free (21.25) and 100 fly (50.08) while freshman Liam Preston took top honors in the 1,000 free (9:29.09) and 500 free (4:34.10). Junior Henry Shemet, meanwhile, was first in the 200 IM (1:54.34) as well as the 100 free (47.46).

Lanfear also swam on the first-place 200 medley relay team, which included junior Xiaoyu Lin, junior Jake Vecchio and senior Ryan Maierle. The Bearcat quartet clocked a time of 1:32.50.

Preston and Shemet, meanwhile, were on the first-place 200 free relay team, which also included Maierle and junior Liam Murphy. Their winning time was 1:25.12.

Other individual winners on the men’s side included Murphy in the 200 free (1:42.84) and Lin in the 100 breast (58.92).

The women’s meet, meanwhile, was decided in the final two individual swimming events – the 500 free and the 100 breast. The Bearcats swept the top three places in the 500 free, led by freshman Alexandra Switalski (5:21.54), junior Marley Zimmerman (5:22.69) and fellow junior Skylar Ward (5:29.61). Binghamton then went 1-2 in the 100 breast, paced by junior Courtney Moane (1:06.65) and sophomore Lauren Kuzma (1:07.15).

Moane was also part of the first-place 200 free relay team, which included freshmen Olivia Philbrick and Maria Pignatelli as well as fellow junior Molly Greeley. Their winning time was 1:45.27.

The Bearcat women swept the diving events. Junior Lindsey Weissman captured the one-meter event (2:06.03) while freshman Elizabeth Tirado was first in the three-meter competition (2:19.75). Junior Mel Carousso, meanwhile, won the 1000 free (11:02.46).

“I thought today was a great day,” head coach Jerry Cummiskey said. “I thought we had a great week coming off our training trip. We came back from Florida and were productive, so overall, I am thrilled with how we swam today. We had a lot people push through and come up big today.”

Binghamton hosts Marist next Saturday at 1 p.m. in its annual Senior Day Meet.

VESTAL, N.Y.—When the dust settled on Saturday the St. Bonaventure women’s swim and dive squad lost by just a single point to Binghamton in a dual meet between the Bonnies and Bearcats.

The Brown and White posted 120.5 points in the road meet, while Binghamton tallied 121.5.

Ellie Kraus provided the first victory of the day for Bona’s in the 200-yard freestyle. Kraus touched the wall in 1:56.10 as she cruised to a more than three second win.

Teammates Halle Myers (24.05) and Amy O’Rourke (24.80) finished first and second respectively in the 50-freestyle, while Silvana Cabrera was victorious in the 200-IM for the third Bonnie victory in just as many events. Cabrera posted a time of 2:10.71.

Cabrera tacked on another victory in the 100-yard butterfly with O’Rourke claiming second. The duo finishing with times of 57.66 and 59.21 for the Bonnies.

The 100-freestyle was dominated by the visiting Brown and White as well; Kraus, Myers and Kathryn Beyer took the top three spots all finishing within two seconds of each other. Kraus’ winning time clocked in at 52.37.

Allison Lenda (58.61) picked up a win for Bonaventure in the 100-yard backstroke, teammate Eylul Alli claimed second place in the event with a time of 59.08.

The final event of the afternoon saw the Bona’s 200-freestyle relay team claim victory. Kraus, Beyer and O’Rourke were joined by Rylie Foley, teaming up for a winning time of 136.99.

In diving action Mary Wilson finished runner-up in the three-meter dive, while Kylie McKee earned a second place finish in the one-meter dive.

The Bonnies return to their home pool on Saturday when they welcome the Gannon Golden Knights to Reilly Center. Bona’s will honor their four seniors in the final dual meet of the season. Diving is scheduled for 10:00 a.m., while swimming will begin at approximately 1:15 p.m. following the Senior Day ceremony.

VESTAL, N.Y. – Freshmen Ben Giera and Luigi Termine earned event victories Saturday afternoon as the St. Bonaventure University men’s swimming and diving team fell at Binghamton, 148-95.

Giera picked up a pair of wins on the diving board, recording scores of 309.30 (3-meter) and 282.00 (1-meter). Fellow diver Lucas Dekaney finished third in both these events with scores of 284.63 and 262.80.

In the 100-backstroke, Termine swam a time of 52.10 to earn a victory. The first-year swimmer was also a member of the 200-medley relay team that finished second with a time of 1:37.29.

Junior Maxwell Murray registered a pair of runner-up finishes in the 1000-freestyle (9:33.54) and 500-freestyle (4:40.34).

In the 200-IM and 100-breaststroke, senior Nicholas Nakaya swam times of 1:55.45 and 59.46 to place second in both events.

Sophomore Alexander Behr touched the wall in a time of 50.65 to finish second in the 100-butterfly, while placing third in the 200-freestyle (1:43.93).

A pair of third-place finishes were registered by Mikolaj Synowiec in the 1000-freestyle (9:53.20) and 500-freestyle (4:46.70). Also, junior Kyle Gluck (100-freestyle) and freshman Henry Wilkes (100-backstroke) each placed third in their respective events.

St. Bonaventure ended Saturday’s dual-meet with a second-place finish from the 200-freestyle relay team of Behr, Gluck, Griffin Witte, and Patrick Heldreth with a time of 1:25.95.

On Saturday, Jan. 28, the Bonnies will end their dual-meet season against Gannon. Five men seniors (Joshua BannonTomas BoteroNicholas NakayaNicholas Torre, and Griffin Witte) will be honored in a recognition ceremony at 12:50 p.m in the Reilly Center Pool. Diving is scheduled for 10:00 a.m., while swimming will begin at approximately 1:15 p.m. following the Senior Day ceremony.
