Backstroker Griffin Schaetzle Commits to Missouri

Griffin Schaetzle from the Erie Aquatics Club in Erie, Pennsylvania has verbally committed to the Missouri Tigers and will bring a new backstroke presence to the Tigers next fall.

Schaetzle’s lifetime bests in yards are 49.86 and 1:48.57 in the 100 and 200 yard backstrokes, respectively.

Those times put her a little behind where current Missouri sophomore Carter Griffin was when he committed in the 200 back, but a full second ahead of where Griffin was in the 100 backstroke. Carter Griffin qualified for NCAA’s last year as a freshman.

Griffin Schaetzle is catching up in the 200 backstroke in a hurry. His progression by grade level:

  • 8th grade year: 2:19.62
  • freshman year: 1:56.22
  • sophomore year: 1:57.42
  • junior year: 1:48.57

Schaeztle, who preps at Mercyhurst, was the Pennsylvania AA (small school) State runner-up in the 100 yard backstroke in March of 2014.
