Australian Pan Pacs and Commonwealth Teams Announced: 42 for Commonwealth and 38 for Pan Pacs

2026 AUSTRALIAN SWIMMING TRIALS

The 2026 Australian Trials are officially over, and Swimming Australia has announced the rosters for the Commonwealth Games and the Pan Pacific Championships this summer. They named 42 swimmers to the Commonwealth Games roster and 38 swimmers to the Pan Pacs roster.

Commonwealth Games Team

The biggest news out of the roster announcements is not who is on both teams, but rather who is not. We have known for a few months that sprinters Cameron McEvoy and Kyle Chalmers would not be attending the Pan Pacific Championships, opting to focus instead on the Commonwealth Games, but there were a few other swimmers who made that decision.

McEvoy and Chalmers were Priority 1 qualifiers for both meets, and they were joined in their decision by two other P1 qualifiers, Matthew Temple and Shayna Jack. Temple won the men’s 100 fly on day two of the meet and Jack finished 2nd in the women’s 50 freestyle on the final day.

Both appear on the Commonwealth Games Roster but will not be attending Pan Pacs the following month. On the women’s side, Jack’s absence is a blow to their 400 freestyle relay after she swam 52.96 in the 100 free to finish 3rd earlier this week.

Temple’s absence is also a blow, as he likely would have swum on the men’s 400 freestyle relay as well as the 400 medley relay. The Australian team will still have 2nd place finisher Ben Armbruster in the 100 fly and on the medley relay, though he was about half-a-second slower than Temple this week.

Flynn Southam and Henry Allan are also present on the Commonwealth Games roster and not on the Pan Pacs roster. Both swimmers earned Priority 2 considerations for both meets, which means it is not clear that they were invited to both meets. With Southam being a sprint freestyler, however, when the Australian men are down three sprinters already, it seems likely he made the same decision as Chalmers, McEvoy, and Temple.

Allan won the men’s 100 backstroke during the meet, and also likely earned a roster spot as a relay-only swimmer.

Finally Tommy Neill and Jessica Cole earned spots on the Commonwealth Games roster as Priority 3 swimmers in the 200 IM and 200 fly respectively.

They did not qualify for Pan Pacs, since they did not meet the SA qualifying time, and were invited based on the extra P3 qualifying times specifically for the CGs.

Pan Pacs Team

On the opposite end of the spectrum, there were a few swimmers who only qualified to swim at the Pan Pacific Championships.

Stuart Swinburn was the only athlete who fell under any priority designation for the Commonwealth Games that is only racing at Pan Pacs. He was Priority 3 in the men’s 200 backstroke after he finished 3rd in the event under the qualifying time, but since the 2nd place finisher, Joshua-Edwards Smith did not get invited to either meet, it seems like Swinburn did not earn a Commonwealth Games Invite.

Swinburn finished 2nd in the men’s 100 backstroke, which made him Priority 2 for Pan Pacs, and since Allan likely chose to focus only on the Commonwealth Games, Swinburn will be the backstroker for the men’s medley.

There were a few other athletes who will likely be attending Pan Pacs for relays only: Max Giuliani, Charlie Hawke, Milla Jansen, and Olivia Wunsch.

Leaving 2025 openwater world champs bronze medallist (Kyle Lee) and 2 x top 10 2025 openwater world champs swimmer (Tom Raymond) at home is bonkers, both swimmers very likely to place extremely well at Pan Pac’s. For clarity, these 2 placed Gold and Silver at Aus Openwater but succumb to the cold in further overseas qualification swims, which should have meant the remaining 2 male spots unfilled for Openwater Pan Pac’s revert back to Aus Openwater results, instead they have both been left at home for some reason and only 2 males will represent Aus at Openwater Pan Pacs. Makes absolutely no sense when comparing the discretion given to some of the Pool team selections.

Seems very very weird. Feel for both men. Ridiculous decision that needs to be explained.

Relays at Pan Pacs are definitely taking a hit. I think the women’s 4×2 is the only one that won’t be missing a key leg. The men’s medley will be missing 3/4 lol.

As I’ve said from the start, I’m expecting Commies to be the focus for most swimmers and then we’ll see what they have left for Pan Pacs

Begs the question – is pan pacs even relevant ? The USA are not even holding trials for it and yet the Aussies made a live tv coverage about team announcement over CG

That was done not because of importance, but only because of tv broadcast rights, which is an unrelated issue.

I think if Swim Aus had the choice they would’ve preferred the CG announcement being made, but they didn’t have a say in this

Not having US trials isn’t a good measure. So all the world champs held without US trials aren’t relevant?

I just meant they’re not sending all their “current” best swimmers to Pan Pacs like Moesch etc so Pan Pacs really needs to assert its value in the swimming calendar because there’s many other events happening now and swimmers are choosing which meets they want to attend or not

Shauna Jack is getting married later this year is another reason

Pan Pacs woman are strong. But the amount of withdrawls in the mens side a bit short. We will have to see ,who will step up.😒🤔

I note Flynn southam was listed as from NSW .. since when ?

Aside from Kyle and Cam – who probably have demands of young families determining their decisions, have any of the others ruling-out PanPacs made any comment about it?

Also, the selection of Swinburn over JES is interesting.

Swinburn was selected based on 100 back not 200 back I’d say .. they could have relied on Isaac cooper for medley relay at pan pacs but he’s unreliable

I think another reason for Chalmers and McEvoy is they are some of the only ones to have actually already been to atleast 1 PanPacs.
Not AUS but still relevant, I thibk one of Summers reasons for skipping CG is because she hasnt done a panpacs but has won multiple CG medals alreary.

Canada deprioritized CG after it was moved/rescheduled and is only sending a very small team unfortunately. While Summer could obviously have attended if she chose to, skipping it probably reflects the national team approach. Pan PACs is instead the apparent focus, as a preparation for LA 2028

You think Summer could go to the Comm Games untapered and treat it like a training session… and would still come home with a few Gold medals…..

in the medleys and maybe 200 fly. Would need to taper to win freestyle events.

Found it a bit strange that SA prioritised the announcement of the Pan Pac team over the Com Games team on the live telecast. I’m sure that to most Australians the Com Games are more important and obviously to some of Australia’s top swimmers given the quality of those who have chosen the CG over the PPs also feel the same.

Apparently it was a channel nine decision since they don’t have CG rights to televise … would have loved to see Henry allan make his first senior team on live tv but he was denied due to channel wars

It seems they did hold a CG team announcement after the livestream was over. There is a team photo with all CG swimmers in it.

Verram and Rossell are both correct.
