Women’s Recap
The Sun Devil women won most of the individual events at the meet, including both relays. They started the day with a victory in the women’s 200 medley relay with the team of Miriam Sheehan (24.07), Ginger McMahon (27.79), Julia Ullmann (22.78), Shane Golland (22.12) coming together to swim 1:36.76 and win the event by more than a second ahead of the University of Arizona team’s 1:38.04 for 2nd.
They also finished the meet with a win in the women’s 4×25 freestyle relay where each athlete raced a 25. Julia Ullmann led off in 10.45. Miriam Sheehan was 2nd in 10.50. Indigo Armon swam 9.85 in 3rd and Shane Golland was 9.88 on the anchor leg.
The ASU women were led by Deniz Ertan who won the first event of the meet, the 1000 freestyle, in 9:45.33. She came in almost nine seconds ahead of teammate Alexa Reyna who swam 9:53.91 for 2nd. The top non-ASU swimmer was Ava Sutphin who swam 10:10.64 to finish 4th overall.
Ertan also won the 500 free, swimming 4:47.84 to touch four seconds ahead of Grace Lindberg who finished 2nd in 4:51.97 for ASU. Elise Clift finished 4th to be the first non-ASU swimmer at 4:56.62, and just behind her was Arizona’s Claire Christie who broke 5:00 for the first time to swim 4:59.32.
Jordan Greber won the 200 freestyle in a new personal best time of 1:46.10, dropping from her previous best of 1:47.30. Arizona’s Kayman Neal came in about a second-and-a-half behind in 1:47.58.
The 50 freestyle was the only event where the ASU team did not walk home with the win. The University of Arizona finished 1st and 2nd in the event with Riley Botton swimming 22.29 for 1st and Julia Wozniak swimming 22.35 for 2nd. Shane Golland was the top ASU swimmer at 22.56.
Sonia Vaishnani was 3rd in the 500 freestyle, touching in 4:53.25, but her day was not without victories as she won the 200 IM in 1:59.93, less than two seconds off her best of 1:58.13. Taylor Stamsy finished 4th for Grand Canyon University in 2:02.76.
The meet had a shortened schedule, meaning the only events remaining were the four 100s of stroke. The 100 fly went to Julia Ullmann by more than two seconds with her swim of 51.99. Miriam Sheehan swam 52.30 to win the 100 backstroke, coming within a tenth of her best time in the event. Ginger McMahon won the 100 breast in 1:00.91, and Gerda Szilagyi won the 100 free in 49.05.
Men’s Recap:
Just like the women’s team, the ASU men won all but one event of the meet.
In the 200 medley relay, they took the top two spots with the “A” relay of Adam Chaney (20.43), Andy Dobrzanski (23.51), Jordan Tiffany (20.18), and Jonny Kulow (18.62) swimming more than two seconds faster than the next closest non-ASU team.
The 4×25 freestyle relay also saw some excitement with the ‘B’ relay coming in just ahead of the ‘A’ relay at 33.44. Remi Fabiani led them off in 8.69 before handing off to Tommy Palmer in 8.23. Quin Seider was 3rd in 8.54 and Adam Chaney swam 7.98 on the anchor leg to be the first man to swim a sub-8 second 25.
There were no two-event winners for the Sun Devils, but they walked home with wins in eight of the nine individuals.
Andrew Taylor won the 1000 freestyle in 9:08.49, which was a new best time for him. He came in ahead of teammate Reece Grady, who was seeded faster at 9:55.49, but ended up swimming 9:17.10. The Sun Devils took the 500 free as well after freshman Noah Mudau swam 4:21.88 to win by just over two seconds ahead of Hayden Hakes.
Remi Fabiani won the 200 freestyle in 1:32.66, a little more than a second ahead of Arizona’s Tomas Lukminas who swam 1:33.61. Arizona also finished 3rd with Ralph Daleidan Ciuferri swimming 1:33.89.
ASU also won both sprint freestyle events. Tommy Palmer won the 100 in 42.37 and Lukminas finished 2nd in 42.49. Florida transfer Adam Chaney won the 50 free in 18.95 ahead of ASU teammate Jonny Kulow‘s 19.19
The 200 IM went to Lucien Vergnes in 1:46.56, two seconds ahead of teammate Michael Hochwalt.
Haakon Naughton (100 fly- 45.33) and Andy Dobrzanski (100 breast- 51.79) were the final event winners for ASU.
The only event that did not go in the Sun Devils favor was the men’s 100 backstroke, which Alex Desangles won in 45.89, coming in just a tenth ahead of Remi Fabiani.

Haakon Naughton swims for UofA
Remi Fabiani, ASU transfer from Cal Baptist, deserves a little special note, or dare I say small article, on the side. He came into the week with the #1 time in the country in both the 50 Free (:18.89 v UNLV [PB :18.82]) and 100 free at :41.73 also v. UNLV [PB :41.23]). Then on Friday, in the Arizona Quad meet, he won a great 200 Free race with another #1 time in the country, touching in a PB 1:32.66 (prior PB 1:33.72 at the 2023 WAC Champs).
No one knows, of course, how the season will end, but it is quite uncommon (except for a Marchand or maybe a Kos, to be leading the country in 3 individual… Read more »
Chaney goes a 19.9 50bk this year at NCAAs.
Ryan Held was 7.96 at the ASU dual meet tournament, sorry Adam Chaney doesn’t get the first sub-8 second 25.
It’s really weird because Herbie called it that
I guess either he forgot or that was before he was there.
