Aleksandra Sabitova Earns Fourth Medal, Dips Under 2 Minutes in 200 Free

Aleksandra Sabitova captured her third victory of the championship in the 200 freestyle, making her the swimmer with the most gold medals at the meet so far. Overall, Sabitova is the second highest medal scorer at the meet, with Daniil Kosenkov having won five medals. 

Her performance was the only 200 freestyle under two minutes, although Daria Trofimova and Victoria Stavostina finished right on Sabitova’s tail. Sabitova clocked in at 1:59.68, followed by Trofmovia’s time of 2:00.59, and  Satvostina’s third place finish with a time of 2:00.85.

Sabitova’s time was just a second outside of the Russian Youth all-time record, which is currently held by Maria Baklakova with her time of 1:58.51. She bested her previous best time of 2:00.33, achieved at the Russian Championships, improving by almost a full second. She consistently held 30s throughout her race, which she took out faster than the rest of her competition. 

Alexandra Kurilkina took the win in the women’s 50 backstroke, touching in a 28.77. Elizaveta Chmykhova came close to Kurklina, but finished just over a tenth behind her in a 28.92. Veronica Shevchenko came in a half-second after Chukhova, missing the 28-mark and finishing in a 29.40.

The best of the men’s swims came from the men’s 200 backstroke, where Alexey Tkachev won the gold medal in a time of 1:59.41. He gained just over a second in the event from his best time of 1:58.36 set at the Russian Championships. On the first night of the meet, Tkachev won the 100 backstroke in a time of 55.34.

Tkachev dominated his competitors by roughly 3 seconds. Artem Norkin and Igor Volkov raced to the finish for second place, touching in 2:02.21 and 2:02.64 (respectively). 

The men’s 800 freestyle relay was the second to last event of the night, and the team of St. Petersburg took the win in a 7:31.34. The team’s lead-off swimmer was Daniil Kosenkov, who took the race out in a swift 1:52.18. His split was the fastest of the evening.
