Akron Women Claim 12 of 14 Events In Big Win Over Bowling Green

Bowling Green, Ohio – The Akron Zips swimming and diving squads went their separate ways as the swimmers defeated Bowling Green 178-84 in a dual meet at Cooper Pool, while the divers showcased quality performances at the UB Diving Invite at the Alumni Arena Natatorium.

Akron moved to 3-1 in dual meets as the Zips claimed 12-of-14 events often sweeping the top two or three positions. The Zips opened the meet by touching first and second in the 200 medley relay. The team of Madelyn Gatrall (25.86), Andrea Fischer (29.02), Rachel Schiffli (24.88) and Olivia DeRodes clocked a 1:43.83 time followed by the runner-up time of 1:44.00 by Rebecca Reid (26.32), Madeline Dyer (29.08), Weronika Gorecka (24.56) and Callie Parkes (24.04).

Abby Daniel (10:03.04), Gail Workman (10:03.87) and Elle Couture (10:16.44) won gold, silver and bronze in the 1000 freestyle relay as the final times were calculated from a broken format by swimming 400, 300, 200 and 100 yard times.

The 200 freestyle race was also segmented, totaling times of a 100 and two 50’s, as Schiffli (1:44.67), Julia Mauter (1:44.91) and Reid (1:44.97) posted top honors. Gorecka captured Akron’s fourth gold medal of the meet, stopping the timer at 26.44 in the 50 backstroke, while Fischer (29.61) and Dyer (30.01) touched first and second in the 50 breaststroke.

Akron swept the top three positions in the next three events, as Gatrall (57.33), Daniel (58.73) and Reid (59.85) claimed the 100 yard backstroke, while Fischer (1:06.20), Dyer (1:06.61) and Giovanna Cappabianca (1:07.33) triumphed in the 100 yard breaststroke. Both events used the average of two 100 yard times. The 500 yard freestyle featured Workman (4:51.21), Couture (4:57.20) and Alyssa Riker (4:58.32) topped the podium in a broken event that featured a 200, 150, 100 and 50 yard races.

Rounding out the individual winners were Gorecka (58.17) and Hannah Trainer (59.94) in the 100 butterfly, while Daniel (4:05.39) and Cappabianca (4:10.83) in the 400 individual medley.

Akron finished the meet with a 200 free win as Schiffli (25.11), Gatrall (23.44), Gorecka (24.10) and Daniel (24:20) flew to a 1:36.85 time.

At the UB Diving Invite, senior Paige Kalik competed in the finals on the 3-meter and 1-meter diving events. In the 3-meter event, Kalik averaged 49.76 points on six dives with a 6.22 degree of difficulty for a third-place, 298.55-point performance. She posted a ninth-place showing on the 1-meter board with a 256.75 points total. Laurel Smith followed with a 10th overall (237.40 points) in the 3-meter final, while Elizabeth Noble finished 10th in the 3-meter finals (249.60 points).

The women’s platform event featured Noble and Smith in the finals. Noble finished third in the women’s platform event, scoring 227.15 points with 45.43 average points per dive on 6.70 degree of difficulty. Smith followed with a fourth-place finish with 221.30 points, a 44.26 average and 5.53 degree of difficulty.

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University swimming and diving teams competed at their own events today. The divers continued competition in the Buffalo Diving Invite as the swimmers took on Akron at home. The swimmers fell to Akron 178-84.

The Falcons had a little different format in today’s meet against Akron. The Falcons swam four broken events and four events where the average time was taken from two swims of the same event.

The Falcons came away with two event wins in the 50 Butterfly and 50 Freestyle. Riley McNichols and Elayna Krupp swapped finishes in the two events. McNichols won the 50 Butterfly with a time of 26.10 and finished second in the 50 Free with a time of 24.39. Meanwhile Krupp won the 50 Free with a time of 24.21 and finished second in the 50 Fly with a time of 26.16.

The Falcons added two more second place finishes in the 50 Backstroke and the 100 Freestyle. Ava Vial finished second in the 100 Free with an average time of 55.52 and finished third in both the 100 Butterfly, with an average time of 1:00.48, and 400 IM, with a total time of 4:15.37. Freshman Falcon Emily McNicol added the final second—place finish in the 50 Backstroke. McNicol also placed fourth in the 100 Backstroke.

Meanwhile the divers were in Buffalo for their first solo Invitational of the season. In the first day of competition the Falcon’s highest finisher was Julia Januszewska with a score of 221.15 in the 1-Meter Dive. Day two brought more success for the Falcons with two divers in the 3-Meter final. Rayah Blood led the Falcons with a fourth-place finish and a score of 291.85. Fellow Falcon diver Sarah Butt finished twelfth with a score of 245.85.
