Mary O’Neill, a current high school senior from Chagrin Falls, Ohio, has committed to dive for North Carolina State University, where she will major in pre-veterinary medicine. Long will graduate from Kenston High School spring 2020 and join the Wolfpack’s class of 2024.
Long currently dives for American Flyers Diving under Coach Dan Miller. As a junior last season, O’Neill placed 8th at the OHSAA D1 State Championships, with 4 of the 7 divers ahead of her graduating. She was also finalist on 1 meter, 3 meter and tower at AAU Nationals and a USA Diving Jr. and Sr. Nationals qualifier.
This past year at the 2019 ACC Championships, the NC State Wolfpack won their second ACC title in the past three years. The team won with 1,353 points: 71 ahead of runners-up Virginia.
Madeline Kline led the way for the Wolfpack divers, winning platform and finishing 8th on 1-meter at the ACC Championships, for 54 points (she didn’t score on the 3-meter). In spite of her success, NC State’s strategy has been to largely bypass diving and save roster spots for their swimmers. But the Wolfpack have put more focus on diving in recent years: their only other scorers at ACCs last year in diving were both freshmen: Taylor Bennett (19th on 1-meter) and Hailey Fisher (22nd on 1-meter).
