Jake Lloyd Sets New State Record In 50 Free At Ohio Division I Championships

Arizona State commit Jake Lloyd ended his high school career on a high note at the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division I State Swimming and Diving Championships.

A senior at Cols St. Charles Prep, Lloyd clocked a time of 19.39, breaking the old record of 19.55 set by Hudson Williams of Oletangy Liberty in 2023. His performance was a big reason why St. Charles Prep repeated as champion, finishing 37.5 points ahead of runner-up Cincinnati St. Xavier.

On the girls’ side, Upper Arlington won its third straight title, finishing 96 points ahead of runner-up Mason.

Girls’ Recap

Upper Arlington was led by sophomore Kiera Powers, who won two individual events and was a part of two winning relay teams.

Powers first swam a personal best time of 1:59.79 to claim the 200 IM, and then followed up by winning the 500 free in a time of 4:55.92.

Powers led off the 200 free relay in 23.86 to help Upper Arlington win that event in a time of 1:33.67. Other team members were Ellie Snider (24.03), Ashton Mumaw (23.33) and Maren Berg (22.45).

In the 400 free relay, Powers set a new 100 free personal best time of 51.34 on the leadoff leg to help Upper Arlington win with a time of 3:24.51. Other team members were Riley Hollingsworth (51.49), Allison Funge (52.52) and Berg (49.16).

Upper Arlington also won the 200 medley relay, with the team of Abby Oliphant (26.12), Lexi Hartzell (29.25), Hollingsworth (24.54) and Mumaw (23.08) touching the wall first in a time of 1:42.99.

The other individual standouts were Kings Mills senior Maya Schweikert and Olentangy Berlin senior Leah Nebraska.

Committed to Georgia, Schweikert pulled a double repeat, defending her titles in both the 100 fly (52.98) and 100 back (52.31).

Nebraska, an Akron commit, won the 50 free in a personal best time of 22.84 and then won the 100 free in a time of 49.98, just five-one-hundredths ahead of defending champion Bella Teply of Mason.

Committed to Northwestern, Teply didn’t go away empty-handed, repeating as champion in the 200 free in a time of 1:47.78.

New Albany freshman Sammy Petroff won the 1-meter diving event with 480.45 points, while Walnut Hills senior Quinn Schureck claimed the 100 breast in a time of 1:01.64.

Boys’ Recap

Not only did Lloyd set a state record in the 50 free in 19.39, but he won the 100 breast in a meet record time of 53.06. topping the old record of 53.53 set in 2019 by Jake Foster of Sycamore.

Foster’s previous record of 53.53 was also the state record, but that was broken on Feb. 21 in a district meet by St. Charles Prep senior Austin Carpenter in 52.97.

Carpenter, who has committed to Texas, was 3rd in the 100 breast at the state meet with a time of 53.38. Carpenter did record one individual win, repeating as champion in the 100 free with a time of 43.06.

Lloyd and Carpenter also helped St. Charles Prep claim two relay titles.

In the 200 medley relay, the squad of Will Liu (23.30), Carpenter (23.64), Cadem Mahl (21.14) and Lloyd (19.12) won in a time of 1:27.20.

Later in the 200 free relay, the team of Carpenter (19.91), Alex Wu (20.31), Mahl (19.81) and Lloyd (19.38) won in a time of 1:19.41.

Chase Grisi, a senior at St. Xavier who has committed to Minnesota, repeated as champion in the 200 free with a time of 1:37.14, and split 43.37 as the anchor of St. Xavier’s team in the 400 free relay that won in 2:58.62. Other team members were Owen Gee (45.90), Aidan Smith (45.40) and Tucker Charles (43.95).

Other individual winners were:

  • Mason senior Liam Clark, a Miami of Ohio commit, won the 200 IM in a personal best 1:49.04.
  • Solon senior Mitchell Caldwell won the 1-meter diving with 588.65 points.
  • Milford junior Brady Campbell, an Indiana commit, won the 100 fly in a personal best time of 46.87 after taking 2nd in the event last year.
  • Beavercreek senior Alex Drachuk, a Cincinnati commit, repeated as champion in the 500 free with a time of 4:31.32.
  • Charles, a junior for St. Xavier, won the 100 back in a personal best time of 48.39.
