For Parkway Central head coach Stephanie Seidel, this was about more than a trophy.
Parkway Central hadn’t won a Missouri State High School Activities Association Girls Class 1 State Championship since 1984, but ended the 42-year drought by claiming the title this year, finishing 26 points ahead of runner-up Tolton.
“It’s about honoring the legacy, the athletes and coaches who built the foundation, and showing that the culture of hard work, dedication and teamwork is still alive today,” Seidel said to West Newsmagazine. “To see this group of young women carry that torch and etch their names into the program’s history is truly special. It’s a moment the entire school and community can celebrate.”
Parkway Central didn’t win an event, but used depth to conquer the rest of the teams at the meet.
Senior Serena Huang was the leading point getter for Parkway Central, finishing in a tie for 3rd in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:08.70 while also placing 5th in the 100 fly (59.39). Huang was also a part of the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay teams that finished 3rd, while Parkway Central earned a runner-up finish in the other relay event of the meet, the 400 free.
The individual standouts of the meet were Cape Central sophomore Karysnne McAlister and Nerinx Hall senior Kate Punnewaert.
McAlister repeated as champion in the 50 free in a time of 23.65 and won the 100 back in a personal best time of 55.35.
Punnewaert, a University of Tampa commit, won the 200 free (1:53.28) and 500 free (5:04.08) after placing 2nd in both last year..
