It’s hard to imagine there being a better day in the 22-year coaching career of Kirt Brown at Canyon View High School.
After four straight runner-up finishes, the Canyon View boys’ team celebrated its first state title, finishing 36 points ahead of runner-up Union.
That wasn’t the only reason to celebrate. The girls’ team also won its first championship, earning more than double the points of runner-up Union.
It was a day Brown had long waited for, but pursuing championships isn’t the main reason why he coaches.
“It’s always the same and that’s how I treat everyone,” Brown told the Deseret News. “Every year it comes down to what you want to swim and what’s best for individual times. When it comes down to it, it’s just about the kids and the individuals, and our kids worked their tails off this year.”
Girls’ Recap
Canyon View was paced by senior Soleil Grimshaw, who was named the Female Swimmer of the Year.
Grimshaw first improved on a 2nd-place finish in the 50 free from last year, winning it this time in a personal best 25.30. Grimshaw followed that up by claiming the 100 free title in a season-best time of 55.01, just shy of the PB she set at last year’s meet en route to placing 3rd (54.73).
