Rice’s Cole, Liberty’s Cannings Earn NCAA Invites on Day 2 of 2026 American Conference Champs

Through the 2nd day of the 2026 American Conference Championships, Rice has maintained their lead in the standings.

The Thursday finals session kicked off with Rice sophomore Reese Cole winning the 400 IM in 4:12.61. With the performance, Cole not only won the AC title, but she qualified for NCAAs as well, as she was under the NCAA qualifying time of 4:13.20. The swim also marks a new career best for Cole, taking a second off her previous best of 4:13.86.

Liberty junior Kamryn Cannings won the 100 fly in 51.77, also punching her ticket to NCAAs. Cannings was well under the NCAA qualifying time of 52.52. The swim was a touch off Cannings’ career best of 51.26, which she swam at the 2024 ASUN Championships.

The women’s 200 free saw a great race between Tulane sophomore Lise Coetzee and Rice sophomore Ava Portello. Portello got out to the early lead, splitting 52.58 on the opening 100, compared to Coetzee’s 52.73. Portello than expanded her lead on the 3rd 50, splitting 26.72 to Coetzee’s 27.01. The last 50 saw Portello fade a touch, splitting 27.48, while Coetzee maintained her speed, coming home in 27.03. Coetzee won the race in 1:46.77, touching 0.01 seconds ahead of Portello’s 1:46.78.

James Madison won the 200 free relay with a 1:30.22. Alexandra Volk (23.04), Emory Hill (22.60), Madison Wimmer (22.70), and Jamie Cornwell (21.88) combined to win the race. Cornwell’s split was the fastest in the field.

East Carolina’s Frida Zuniga Guzman won 1-meter diving with a score of 314.75.
